1954 Laurentian

I found another 54 again that I may be interetsed in.

Looking for some info.

This car has an inline 6 in it. I assume this is not original ot the car,. I am assumming the 6's would be flat head.

This car seems at first look prety solid but where are the typical rust spots?  Rockers?  Rear trunk pans?

Any help is appreciated as to what I should be looking at before I make an offer.

BTW ...what should I pay for this car?

I had a solid 54 Chevy however there was still some rot around the doglegs and under the back seat and behind the rear wheels. The rockers go on some of them as well. Typically they are great cars. That looks like a good one. Any more photos?

look at  the frame/body support just in front of the rear wheel, on the outside part of the frame. If this portion of the car is in good condition, the rest should be fine.

Thanks guys !

Had a quick look at it last night again. The rockers definately have been bondo'ed.  It brought back memories of someone on here (at least I think it was this forum) who bought one of these and found low expansiion foam in his rockers when he went to repair them properly.

There is some rust on the rear fenders where the skirts meet the fenders. Rest of the car on top seems to be solid.

I guess if I want to go any further now, I'll have to get it up on a hoist and have a good look underneath.

My other concern is that I don't believe the engine is original. Can anyone confirm what the engine should be? A flat head 6?  It currently is an inline 6.

Any idea what price range I should be paying for it?  There are not very many on the internet to compare it to.

My guess would be: 1954 ... last of the Canadian flatheads.

Yes it should have a flat head six or it could have had a flat head eight when new!  !954 was the last year for the old flat heads!  Bob.

These could have come with either the flat head or overhead valve six in Canada. 235 cu in. Just check the engine number on the engine and verify it with the engine no. on the data plate.

it's the first I heard inline OHV 6 (like chevy) was offered in canadian Pontiac. But for sure no flathead 8 was offered for canadian version of Pontiac, and no Hydra-matic, only Powerglide or 3 speed manual.

I'm  very curious about the engine# and VIN plate...

I really don't think the inline OHV 6 was offered, it's suppose to change not only the engine, but the tank tubing side, brake tubing side, wiring, exhaust side, bracketing, battery side, the powerglide (if equipped) bell housing. You can say «Gm had to money to do that..»

Ok
As for price on this car its a bit of a touchy one. they made lots of them, but less in the Laurention line. Mine is a Pathfinder deluxe which is one line below this one. Mine is a good driver rated at a 2 to 3 car and I would say its reasonably in the range of being worth around $7000. I had it aprasied a while back and the number was just over $9000. I think the market is lower right now than the aprasial value today. I hope this helps? Let me know how the sale goes.

Fitz is correct, but he is speaking of the Pathfinder, Canadian Laurention line. They did sell the "big" US Pontiacs in Canada, Imported them in and put a Canadian vin tag. This model the post is asking about is what looks like a Canadian Pathfinder, Laurention. Which would have the 239 L flat head Six. This was the only Optioned engine in 53/54 in Canada. For those lines of cars. Unless you had the higher line cars like the US models could you get the inline flat eight. Thats it.. Until everything changed in 55.

Thank you  for the info. The asking price is $6500.00 but  it is going to need some rust repair shortly. The rust is just beginning to show in a few spots but I know all to well that there is more there than I can see.

mine has some bondo work on it too. Mine also has some of the body braces in rough shape the frame is solid. I think the one your looking at is close to mine in shape. How is the motor? Here mine might be a little better. So price is in the right range. Good luck! nice car I think.

Appraised value & sale value are 2 different things. Appr. value is an insurance 'replacement dollar " figure  NOT the figure it' might "possibly" get in re-sale. I usually knock off about 2 grand from appr. value on a car under 10 or 11 grand  too come up with a reasonable "close' value!!sale price & this usually comes in "about" right!!!!
