so if mine is not a BOP then i have the chev 8.2 ? is that better for getting a posi and gears or worse eric , i mean i know there much weaker but what are my options if its a chev 8,2,
Darryl, process of elimination says you have a Chev rear axle. Are you sure that is the original rear diff? The picture I posted is of an Oswaha built Lemans Sport rear diff. making me think that there is a possibility that the rear axle in your car is not original.
An 8.2 isn't the worst thing for rear diff.'s and can be rebuilt as a pretty reliable axle for a street car. The 8.2 and 8.5 share axles and brakes. I believe in a recent issue of Super Chevy magazine they go through a rebuild of an 8.2.
To answer your question regarding parts support, yes a Chev rear axle will have a greater parts availability than the BOP. Probably better prices as well.
Tim i'm still here. i have to pick up the diff from a friend but it has been a bit of a challenge, i think i can get it today so bare with me. my address is 126 bonn rd brighton. it's about an hour east of you.my phone # is 613-475-2736.

Looking at the rear from the back of the car.. look to the lower right and see if you can see the casting number 979--100 or something like that.. Your diff cover has been changed out or its a 8.5... All the Pontiac lemans etc had the BOP rear with the scallops on either end of the cover... A Chevelle, Olds, Buick, Pontiac rear from 68-72 will fit your ole girl 10 or 12 bolt.. I have a buddy with a 3:55 posi drum to drum 12 bolt that would fit your application if he has not sold it yet.. in Kingston..
wicked pete i got to get this rear out, i hate it, rarechev said he has a 8.2 posi but i dont know where he went, i will go out and look for another #but 3910823 15-41 is what i seen so far, what gear oil do i put back in this thing and how many bottle's nice GOAT bye the way
Pete I didn't think you could put a Chev cover on a BOP and not have it leak at the scallops. I suppose enough silicone can fix anything.
With the 9/16 head fasteners holding the ring (crown) gear to the carrier, that is an 8.2. If the cover has been replaced the only other way I would now of confirming what you have for an axle is if the axles are held in with C-clips at the carrier or with press on bearings and retainers at the axle housing ends. Chev has C-clips.
