changing the king pins on my 54

Hey all

Well took the 54 for it's out of province inspection and they found a couple little things.I had one lug nut that wouldn't tighten up on the d.s front wheel, that took all of 2 mins to fix since i had a few spare new lug nuts in the glove boxy say the e brake cables need to be adjusted,i just put all new cables on and had set them thought was tight enough but maybe they need a little more. They say one king pin on the ps has too much play.I knew it had a little play but heck it's a 54 they probably weren't that tight from new.Anyways if i'm going to do one i might as well do both.I know i can find them on ebay for under a hundred bucks maybe even locally.I again assume a 54 chevy set will work. How hard a re they to change? The instructions in the manual are pretty basic but can't say i've ever done a set.Last i need a ps tie rod end so need to track one down as well.Personally i think they were just fishing for some more business, they don't have the best rep in town, but unfortunetly they are the only shop in town that can do an out of province.Last they whined a bit cause on my request form it says pontiac pathfinder but on my insurance form they list it as a pontiac laurentian and even thought the vin numbers are the same.I have always thought it was a pathfinder deluxe but my gm report lists it as a laurentian.Hat seen the pics from the 54 brochure they may be right as mine has the laurentian trim not the pathfinder that they show.A small thing but boy htey didn#t seem to like the difference on the paperwork. An easy fix though.

I had to do my p.s. king pin too, i said to myself to do both sides at the same time. when i looked closer at the drivers side, the previous owner changed it, i would say about 5yrs ago so i just left it. I ordered my kingpin set from www.chevsofthe40s.com part number599207, its the chevy part that works for 39-54 chev/pontiac and 53-62 corvette their price is around $79.00 for the complete kit for both sides. i didnt find it that hard at all to change, just have to make sure the grease holes line up on the bushings smile they pressed in fairly easy without issue. Oh and i also changed the p.s. long tie rod out as well, got it from the same place part number 3692953 and that was around $100 for 49-54 chev/pontiac cars. These guys and gals know the chevy parts really well and if you know what works for the pontiac just order as a chevy guy, it makes things fasterwink great service too!!!

I managed to find the king pin set at my local bumper to bumper moog 8282b,they had one in b.c so it's on the way.I also noticed that my sway bar link bushings were really cracked, although they said nothing about them on the inspection,so i ordered up a couple links as well moog k5227.The king pin set was about 100.00 and the links were 10.00 each. The only thing i can't find so far is the tie rod end for the p.s.It is the solid one that is 24 1/2 inch center to center.I have found a couple on ebay and now i know chevs of the 40's has them.Unfortunetly my moog book stops for tie rod ends at 1955 and they are different than mine.Anybody got a good moog or trw number i could cross?

finally got the parts rounded up to finish fixing the 54.It had a few issues on the inspection so has been sitting for a few weeks waiting for parts.First got the bad wheel stud changed, turns out it wasn't the stud but a bad nut, easy fix.Second was the e brake not coming on enough,an easy adjustment of the new cables and thats good.Third was the bad p.s tie rod end.A bit of a search to find it and then it was backordered. It finally came this week and a couple nuts and done.Last was the kingpins,i was going to take it to my buddies garage and get them done but got brave and did them myself.Happy i did cause they were pretty easy to do in the end.So now just a few bolts to torque, cotter pins, grease job and it can go back for the second inspection and finally plates.Hopefully i can get out for a few drives before its time to park it for the winter.

Great to here that your road ready now, how about some pics of the car . I was nervous too about doing my Kingpins as well but after I did that, everything else seemed to go easy on the rest of the front end. Except when I rebuilt the idler arm, I needed a shop to press in those nice new tight bushings.

I know you don't need these now but in future you can try National Chevy Parts.P/side tie rod is $125, king pin Kit $55 www.49-54nca.com or www.nationalchevyassoc.com I v'e dealt with them, service is good & will mail small parts. The big stuff I have shipped to friend's in US & pick it up. My complete Interior came from them

I knew about chevs of the 40's but unfortunetly i don't do the credit card thing anymore, got rid of them all.So now am limited to sites that do paypal or wait to send a money order.I mahaged to find the tie rod on ebay and the king pins i found through my local bumper to bumper. It just took awhile for the tie rod end to ship.It says made in argentinia on it,makes you wonder if their still producing them for places like cuba.Saw all sorts of 50's vehicles on the roads down there.

My tie rod was made in Argentina as well, I got mine through Chevs  of the 40's, it looks better quality than the one I had in the car.
