In 2001 at the GM Autofest I met a guy with 2 cars at the show; a Canadian 1966 Impala Sport sedan(283)  & a 1965 U.S. Impala SS convertible with a 396. He told me flat out that in 1965 the 396 was not available on Canadian Chevrolets or Pontiacs. Evidence on this site seems to suggest that the 409 was carried through the entire 1965 run since big blocks were merely trickling off the line

 That would make economic sense.

Any way of finding out whether this was originally a 409 car?  A 409 '65 Poncho 4 door would definitely be a cool item for sure.

I would prefer to have the VIN but the data plate should be serachable by GMVVS. Remember that 409 in a 65 is few and far between , less than 40 I would think.

I agree with the assessment that a 65 built in sept 64 would not have a 396.  As well as far as i know there were about 75 409s built in the custom sports and maybe the same amount for all the other non sporty lines so chance are pretty slim on that as well.

Now we know!

Hmmm... would like to know the story on how it ended up with a 396... some cool stories roll around from back in the day...

Engine blew, went to junk yard and spied 69 Grand Parisienne with big block, bought it and put it in, it's a simple bolt in job.

I suspect so.

I think it's pretty much safe now to say there are no factory installed 396's in 65 Pontiacs.
