Correct 66 Grande rear Panel treatment?

Hi collective smart guys.  I am trying to reassemble my rear end.  (no snickering!)  My 66 had multiple cheap paint jobs before I got it so I'm not sure if the areas between the louvers on the rear panel are supposed to be black or body colour.  I have a parts 66 Grande panel that I don't think was repainted and it shows  black between the louvers.

Here are pics of the two choices i seem to have.  What is your advice?

Crap, the Gold one I posted is painted black, I thought it was a shadow but zooming in shows its not. The other 2 I posted are painted body color confuse Could it depend of the factory or date it was built???

No 66 expert, but logic would tell me black between the louvers. If only to offer the appearance of full length tailights during the daytime.

I think you guys hit it on the head.  I couldn't find any low angle rear ends shot of original  Grande  Parisiennes but after a while i thought to search on Grande Prixs (i figure they would be trimmed the same.) and I found this quote from Old Car.com:

"The Grand Prix was slightly restyled for 1966 with a wire mesh "eggcrate" grille and rectangular parking lamps. The Grand Prix's taillight panel featured chrome trim ribs, blacked out in between to give the impression of full-width taillights. '66 still wore the fender skirts and was also the last year for the tri-power."

So I think i have my answer and it would look cooler anyways, so a masking we will go!

I saw that too Carl, but I've always been a bit suspicious of brochure art as it it usually done quite a while before the cars come out.  I'd like to see a few shots of Canadian original paint cars.  That being said it is a distinct possibility the canuck cars were a bit more cheaply trimmed and not painting the black would save a bit of detail work.  Or maybe it was just done for some colours?   Hmmm.

Hopefully somebody with a really good memory will show up here.

It's been a long time Ken but I am thinking the cars I've parted out had body colour. But then again, right now I have one of the worst head colds I've ever had so my thinking is not the greatest.

That would be great because I'm even more confused after finding this picture from a Grande Prix brochure which directly contradicts the quote I put up. Very puzzling...

No problem!

I'm not a gambler but I'm betting on body colour as the final answer.

I'm convinced now Ken. I spent some time in Google images. I found a gold car, gold rear panel. It would look wrong with a black panel.

This reminds me of the debate over scoop insert colour for the 73 NASA hood. What we find is that at different times of assembly and different assembly plants the colour could be either black or body colour. I'd say the same thng here. To my eye black is much nicer. As for factory correct nobody here knows so make it the way you like.

All i can say is I'm glad I'm a slow masker.  I think I'll leave it body colour and if I can't stand it I'll change it.  Thanks for all the input guys.

Ken, my cloudy brain is slowly feeding me information!

I remember stripping the original paint off my 4 speed Grande Parisienne and there is no question the rear body panel was blue.

Plus I parted out a green original paint 66 Grande Parisienne and the panel was certainly green. And yes, it WAS a 396 car...!
