engine numbers, help decode please

K indicates St. Catherines, McKinnon engine, suffix code 800 I think is service replacement. My 73 LeMans had a 3970010 350 block and that casting is generally regarded as a good one used in lots of applications from passenger cars to trucks and even Corvettes as Carl shows. Also Chevy By The Numbers list s 302 in 69 with this casting.

Hey guys, I'm new to this site.., I didn't know much about the Beaumonts or their Canadian history, but I've been learning a lot.

So I recently came into a '68 Beaumont Custom, by fluke, and now I'm trying to determin what engine is in the car, and whether or not it is original;

The VIN number is: 736378110xxxx

The driver's rear of motor has a casting number of: 3970010

and the stamped in code in front of the passenger side head reads: K0309 800

010 block is a 350, late '69-'80 production

 Casting Date Example: E038 - (E = Month, 03 = Day, 8 = Last digit of model year (1978)).

Month: A = Jan, B = Feb, C = Mar, D = Apr, E = May, F = Jun, G = July, H = Aug, I = Sep, J = Oct, K = Nov, L = Dec

I've also read where the engine casting number can be a 327 for 1968?

1968 3970010 327 - - 2 A

I too have read that elswewhere BUT Chevy By The Numbers does not show it. I edited my original post which included 327 to agree with the bible on this.

I got a 350 four bolt main block that has K0579 800 on it.  I think Ray is right about the 800 being a service replacement code as it does not show up as a regular suffix code. I have been looking for info on my block and having no luck. Nothing makes sense on the code except  the K.

what engine is in the car,

probably not original     If you send VIN to GM Historical they can tell you the engine

Where in B.C. are you?  I might have a 327 for sale here shortly.

I'm in the west Kootenays.., let me know when and if your engine becomes available.

so am I correct in decoding this?

K0309 800: K = McKinnon, 03 = Novemember, 09 = 1969, 800 = Service Replacement

Google tells me the 800 code is for an early GM crate motor like a Targetmaster, which was later renamed "GM Goodwrench" or "Goodwrench 350"

thanks for all the replies!

That could be the date code that would make my 0579 as May of 79 block. Will have to look at the block casting dates and see if its close to this date. You might be on to something there.

This is from the Americain Parts Book, I would say yours is a 1979 Targetmaster built in Canada

Thanks gerry for that info. Looks like you helped Brisk and myself with this . My block casting date is 9 E 4 ( 79-May 4th)  Three days before the block build date of K0579800   May 7th 79. Looks like Brisks engine date would be 03 for March and the 0 would be the 30 TH ?
