It's not like the Camaro is a bread and butter car for GM and the workers. Besides guys on car forums like this which have to make up a nano of a percent of the car buying public there is no market anywhere for a 400 HP V8 fat, overweight and ugly automobile. I don't really see the big deal, sorry. They will be better off building the higher demand Impala which will likely fill the gap or exceed the lost Camaro production. If you look at the history of cars like the Camaro each generation has generally been built at a different plant. The mind boggles how all threads turn into some political statement against the USA and President Obama
and labor, which accounts for only 7% of a new cars production cost.Check the link ive provided above, helps put a perspective on the whole thing i think
Just for the record, I actually have a lot of respect for Obama. As far as I'm concerned the guy walked into the most screwed up mess in US history thanks to his predecessor - the supposed financial conservative who spent the US into the poor house.
The US Gov't bailed out GM and they should get something for their investment. I'd be disappointed if Obama wasn't trying to pull jobs to the USA. It seems to me that's what the leader of the country should be doing.

But this is not a political forum.
If it is not a political forum, then why are you being political? The reality that you miss is that he has put the U.S. in a far far far greater mess than the useless previous leader ever did by doing nothing, absolutely nothing about the problem. Other than creating a bigger problem in the U.S. economicly, what else has he done? "Cool" is not enough to lead a country. I do agree with you that he is looking out for his own in regard to bringing back jobs to the U.S. that are now here in Canada but where does that leave us? Keep respecting your Obama there, when he helps continue sucking Canada dry of the few jobs we have left here. Cheers. George.

give it about 20 years, they'll be building cars in china for the N/American market
20 years? I would give it five years. It is getting to the point where it makes little sense buying from the big three here in North America. Just buy what ever makes you happy and do not worry where the car is made. I am getting really apathetic about the whole thing because there is nothing you can do about it anyway. George.

As a person who lives and breathes this stuff, I think the Canadian news media has overblown this as usual.
GM did not say they would not replace this car with higher production or a different model.
Two plants, hundreds of miles apart building one platform at about 50% capacity does not make sense.
Automakers often move plants at the launch of a new platform so they can gear up the new while gearing down the old.
Ford does this all the time.
The 05 Mustang was launched in Flatrock Michigan while the 04 was still being built in Detroit.
And speaking of Flatrock MI, after Mazda pulled all production out of North America, Ford Launched the new Fusion platform there, ending Mexican production of that car.
Ford also plans to pull its Lincolns out of Chicago to be built in Flatrock. Again they will be on the Fusion platform.
I speculate then they will move two of the low selling Oakville Vehicles to Chicago as they sit on the same Volvo platform as the Explorer and Taurus leaving the high selling Edge and MKX in Canada.
As for Cami, what the Canadian media never mentions is that GM imports thousands of Mexican CUVs into the US in a short term agreement with the US government and is sold as fleet and rentals.
They used to be the little Saturns.
The Tennessee plant will be pretty much replacing those vehicles.
I don't think this is a labour related or political decision at all.
It was purely a sound business decision.
We are just not use to GM making sound decisions.
And that type of decision is very boring to the press.
When was the last time the newspaper read, GM made a sound decision.
Total and complete agrement with Muttwood. That all makes complete sense to me but sadly it sometimes means the loss of someones job in the process. I think most of us know that business is business and you have to run your company like a business and not a job creation program. George.

I, for one am not surprised. I recall when the Gen 4 Camaro/Firebird was cancelled, GM claimed the car was not selling in the US due to it being built in Canada. Probably not the real reason, but it seems GM really doesn't like assembling vehicles here, and if they could, they would build their entire lineup in the US.

Yes that is the reality and do you blame them. After all GM is an AMERICAN company and you have to look after your own first. Sadly we are in some real serious trouble down the road here in Ontario. George.

But wouldn't be nice to have something with 400+HP, very reliable 6 speed stick, very modern suspension and brakes, excellent sound system, something that has a wealth of bolt on after market parts to make it even more of a hot rod bohemeth than it is? Something that's just as much as a Corvette yet has a back seat and a decent trunk? Even something that's a convertable top with headliner, heated rear window, and hi-tech side windows that automatically drop an inch each time you go to close the door as not to "over pressure" the interior and stress the roof. Something that's an SS designation, 6.2 litre V-8 yet it's 5-10,000 dollars less than it's rival The Dodge Challenger SRT?........And it's built in Canada still, right now.
Whoops, this letter was meant to go to Santa!
