AC Delco (ac44) spark plug

Which sparkplug can I use instead of the AC44 or AC46 in my 1960 Lauarentian, 261 cui engine.

The are not in stock/made anymore.

Thanks!

If you can find an R44, it is identical. It is just made so that it will not cause interfence on radios etc. If not, if you can find 43 or R43, they would work fine too. They are just a slightly "colder" spark plug but do the job for you.

I wouldn't go too cold if you just cruise slowly around town with your car, they will foul up. Colder plugs are used more in the case of driving your vehicle faster/harder. I went for a warmer plug in my own car to stop the fouling.

As long as the choke is not on for long periods and it sees some highway driving it should be ok though. If it was just used for an occasional 5 minute run time after time I'd be concerned.

For the miles these old cars see, even if a guy has to do plugs every 2 or 3 years it's not a big deal. Plugs are cheap.

I think the AC44 is the more good then AC46 because of its performance and durability.... According to me you can use both but I suggest you the Ac44. Good Luck.......

Torben, welcome to the site from Barrie Ontario. Two plugs that were used on my 64 were the AC44 And AC45. I scored (8) new 44s at a swap meet for $1.00 each. It is the heat range plug for my 327 engine. For alot of city and short runs AC45s would be a reasonable plug choice, one range hotter. always look at the depth of the threads and the ground electrode so you do not go too deep into the combustion chamber. Use your existing plugs as a reference for depth.

The problem with using the plug with an "S" on the end is on some applications it will have piston interference. I've seen the wrong plug used with a the electrode clipped by the piston.

If you change to different plug, will it hurt the appraisal of the car?  wink

You can get the AC45 through your GM dealer if your parts guy is worth his salt, there is a heritage program they have that will give them parts numbers they can order. Thats where I get mine from never had a problem ordering them either.

...we're using Autolite 86's in our 283. Anybody ever used that plug or have comments on it?
