Brake light assistance!!!!

Affirmative on the 2 prong switch, one white wire, and then the red wire is clearly just a 2-3 inch segment of 12 gauge red wire with and eyelet and a spade crimped on...i know it was incorrect,I just don't know what should be there and it's been that way since the car came home.
my flasher now.... is a little box that someone has installed behind the dash.I just went out and pulled it so you can see the box, normally it get's fastened through the hole in the dash but it didn't look original either considering the hole looks like a toddler with a broken wrist drilled it. no

Alright guys....I have an issue that i'm hoping one of you guys can give me some insight in,I've been through my fair share of cars (2 70's T/A's a,79 Z28,a 68 impala SS and a 69 buick skylark...all have been sold)and have lucked out pretty much everytime on electrical, never more than a disconnected pigtail of some sort if anything at all,so i am NOT knowledgeable with electrical...I'm going to explain with as much detail as possible,so sorry for the read.

I have reached a VERY irritating roadblock, when i brought the beast home none of the electrical at the rear worked with the exception of the hazards, and only the 2 outer lenses would blink,so fast forward to the car running well and the car being solid and driveable,i replaced all 4 tail sockets and the turn signal switch now i have tail lights and blinkers, but no brake lights,I replaced the switch at the brake pedal, and i think therin lies the issue,on the 2 prongs there's a white wire, and the a very short red one bolted to one of the brackets under the dash...very obviously something someone did in the past,What wire should be on the other prong?the white one has not been screwed with, but i have no idea what's suppose to be in place of the home made red ground wire...or why they did that to begin with, also i"ve noticed that after i've managed to get the tail lights and blinkers working...as soon as i pull the knob for the flashers there's a 50/50 chance that the interior lights' fuse blows...My wiring harness isn't too beat up so it's not like it's a hack job under there...just the exception of the brake light switch and some really crappy home stereo wiring someone used for the old CD deck.I have taken a bore cleaning brush from my gun kit and cleaned all the fuse prongs...even though they weren't all that bad,and yes i disconnected the  battery first..lol

Anyway,If anyone needs some more info i will be as much assistance as i can,Thanks guys.

I have questions-

Are you saying that of the two pins on the brake light switch, one has a white wire to it and the other a red wire that goes to ground?

Where is your flasher knob? I assume on a 66 you must have the underdash accessory style flasher box?

Ok, yes, that is an accessory flasher unit. I would suggest removing it, which should be easy. It should have connectors that plug in between the signal harness coming from the top of the column and the main underdash harness. Remove it and just plug the signal harness direct to the dash harness. Then you have removed one potential problem.

Then you need to find out what colour the other brake light switch wire should be, find the wire and put it on the switch. I can check my 66 if you want.

I checked, the white wire runs with the orange wire over to the same area that the signal harness is at, on the other side (left side) of the column. I am guessing you will have a snipped orange wire over there somewhere maybe?

No problem, if it gets totally out of control I have the GM wiring diagram for it. We'll get it figured out.

Well Carl,I got it figured out.Deep in the heart of the dash wiring i found that little orange wire spliced into the bigger orange wire that goes to the hazard switch,Repaired big orange wire,Put a spade on little orange wire and put it back in it's natural habitat at the brake switch, all is well, brake lights function,as do hazards without any fuse blowing, and it's all thanks to you for showing me what to look for,Much appreciated carl, thank you so much.all in the same day the brand new weather stripping came and my old rally 2's from my TA were pulled outta storage, good day for the parisienne.smile

Excellent, I'm glad you got it working. Someone must not have understood the workings of it all when they tried to wire in the hazards I guess?

This forum has been a lifesaver for me many times so it was fun to be able to help someone out for a change!
