I was watching that auction, and I've dealt with the seller before - He's been great to deal with. Norm Dumontier in Winnipeg has a couple of these 140 mph speedo's, and he was telling me about the guage package that fits into the clock hole. Very rare.
I've been looking and watching these rare 69 speedo's for years and this one is by far the most complete package I've seen . The wiring harness is key , and this one had it all .. thus the price . The 140 speedo usually goes for $800-1000 , but not came with the gauges which are extremely rare .
I've contemplated putting one of these set ups in my Biscayne , but like others have said , it was more police application . ( and replacing dash & wiring assemblies is not exactly fun)
Yes it was predominantly a police/fleet option. With the 140 mph speedo this one was almost assuredly from a police unit. You could get the 140 mph speedo without gauges too.
I have a 68 140 mph police car speedo (no gauges) and I once drove a 68 SS396 Impala that had the 140 speedo with the gauges, almost certainly added by a former owner. The gauges are marked differently in the 68 fleet units as compared to the regular super sport with gauges.
Here's a link to more info on the 69 units. You can also find 68 info in a related page.
