Anyone here like Fords? 1971 MACh 1 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air 4 speed

I just bought my first Mustang on Mar. 13, it is a 1971 Mach 1 that was advertised as a complete car good for parts. It has a 351 with an automatic transmission but the seller said it had a 429 in it at one time. I didn't know anything about these cars, nothing at all so I spent most of Wednesday the 13th learning about them before I went to see the car. With the chance that it was an original 429 car I was hoping it would be a J code with the Drag Pack. When I arrived at the sellers home I looked at the VIN and there was that J code I was hoping for. I bought the car and took it home and later that evening I sent for the Marti Report which I received the next morning. The car didn't come with the Drag Pack but it did come with a 429 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine, close ratio 4 speed transmission and a 3.50 Traction-Loc rear axle, the car is Grabber Blue with white interior and sold new in Quebec. We plan on just cleaning it up for now and getting it inside. Eventually we will pull the 351 and the automatic transmission out and look for the correct 429 CJ engine and close ratio 4 speed transmission.

Here are some pictures of it when I first saw it and after I got it home and started cleaning it up (don't let that fresh coat of water fool you),

That cleaned up really nice, it's amazing how much better a car looks when you get the moss etc off of it.    I'm not a Ford expert, and I could never figure out the 429, 429 Cobra Jet, 429 Super Cobra Jet, etc.   The Boss 429 I know.

Which 351 is in it?  Cleveland, Windsor or I think there was also an "M" which I can't remember what it stood for.

Good score!!!

I thought there was the 427 SOHC, and the 429 Boss that were hemi style heads. I didn't know about the 428's.

Did all the 428's have hemi-style heads? Or was the hemi only in the CJ or SCJ?

Knew a guy who built a 429 Boss years ago. Getting parts in the late 70's was almost impossible. I think it took him months to track down a gasket set.

Actually, that's exactly why I was never a fan of Fords.   Compatibility between different Ford engines was always confusing.  At least to me.

I am not a Ford expert either but I learned a lot in the last few days, I believe these are the differences,

The J code cars had a 429 Cobra Jet with Ram Air and a Quadrajet carb
The C code cars had a 429 Cobra Jet without Ram Air and came with a Quadrajet carb also

A J code or C code with the Drag Pack, 3.91 or lower gears got the Super Cobra Jet engine with a Holley carb and a few other things.

I haven't checked the numbers on the 351 yet, I don't know anything about them either. It does have a Holley intake manifold on it.

Yes it did clean up pretty nice but we still have a lot to do.

A F**d the Marti Report is sent electronically to you overnight? Wow, that's quick. They must have a night shift! If you don't mind me asking, how much does it cost?

Nice car! I appreciate them, even though I'm not a F**d guy.

When I was young and our family lived in military housing, one of our neighbours had a yellow one. He used to spark-up the studded tires at night time in the winter!biggrin

You can tell a 351 Cleveland from a Windsor easily at a glance. 351C has exhaust ports you can stick your fist in (OK - maybe 3 or 4 fingers). A Windsor has exhaust ports about the same size as a SBC. The intake ports are a little harder to see, but the C's also have bigger intake ports.

I'm not a Ford expert either, but the heads on 302 Boss' and 351C's are impressive.

What was the code for the Boss 429? I've only ever seen one of those engines. I'd need to go away and read up to remember the difference between the 427 and all the 428's and 429's....

Neat find.

The 428 had hemi style heads, not many went into production cars. The other two, no idea.

Yes nice find!

Sorry you're right, it was the Boss 429, not the 428, not sure about 427. Got my numbers mixed up.

All I have to say is good score.429's aren't that really hard to come by.I've seen them for sale in Thunderbirds-cheap.The 429's and 460's are the same block.I know where there is a Top loader 4 spd from a '69-'70 429 for sale-cheap also. You have a very neat car there. One that I would own in a heartbeat. The 429's I heard were torque monsters and coupled behind a 4 spd you have even a neater car.Again-good score.

Easiest way to tell a 351 Windsor from a Cleveland is by looking at the fuel pump bolts.   Windsor bolts are side by side like on a small/big block Chevy.   Cleveland bolts are top and bottom.

The Deluxe Marti Report was $40 plus $10 for rush service, $25 for a Vehicle Certification Label (repro door sticker), $4 for a mailed copy and $20 shipping.

They offer other reports such as the Elite for $200 which comes framed for display and has more information such as how many were built with each option.

It's a small world... A friend of mine knew the owner of this car in the early 1980's in Penticton, B.C., it was the uncle of the guy I bought the car from. He sent me this picture of the car that was taken back then. It was painted light metallic blue after it was red then returned to Grabber Blue. We found red and light metallic blue yesterday when we washed the car.

This picture was taken around 1987,

Does he know where the original 429 ended up? You never know, some BBC's were pulled and replaced with SBC's back in the 70's just to get a little better gas mileage (OK - maybe a LOT better gas mileage).

Yes, he said it was pulled years ago by another previous owner. We are going to see if we can find it.

I sent Jerry Heasley some pictures of the car and a brief story, he mentioned that he can use this in his column in Musclecar Review in the June issue :)

I had a 68 Ranchero 351 W 4spd,I really thought it was pretty cool,I enjoyed it.The problem with it though,is that it looked really solid, but the steel on the body was weird. It looked solid, but it was rotten. You could take a jack knife and push it through pretty much anywhere, like pushing a knife through a pringle chip, yet the car did not appear rusty at all.I think if I tried to sand blast that truck,it would turn to dust,it was so strange,as long as you never did that to it or though about how rotten it was,I loved it.confuseconfuseconfuseconfuseconfuse
