I'd say your pump motor is drawing too many amps. If you don't want to spend the money and replace it just yet, put a couple of relays in the circuit. Mine has been like that for 18 years now.

Check the fluid level in Top Pump, maybe causing high draw??? I replaced one on a 69 Cutlass ,but it would stick in the up position & owner didn't hear the pump straining & burn't the switch out!!!! Just 2 things to check out?? Pete

OK, here's how I wired in the relays. As you can see in my diagram, cut the up and down wires going to the pump at a convenient spot for your relays (pretty sure I mounted mine to the brake pedal bracket). The relay terminals are numbered so attach the switch side to 85 and the pump side to 87. Make sure it's 87 not 87a. 87 is normally open and 87a is normally closed. Wire in power to terminal 30. You can Tee into the switch power wire or go right to the breaker. I Teed in so under hood still looks stock. Then ground terminal 86. Make sure you use the same gage of wire as original in the pump circuit (30 and 87). Not important for the relay energize circuit (85 and 86). Hope this helps you. Good luck.
