my 68 aussie assembled pontiac

hi from north queensland , australia . here are a few pics of my aussie assembled 1968 ponti 4 door pillarless parisienne . she's a one owner thats been 3/4 restored by the original owners son after the old bloke died in '97 . all original except for widened 15'' rims and a bare metal respray in the original colour .. even the 327 which has been rebuilt 12,000km ago is the original motor and the power glide is still sweet as . it will need a few things to tidy it up so it can be a daily . more pics as she get prettied up . the engine bay in a mess thoug as its been run on gas since new and the ga set from 68 is not a pretty thing to look at ! .. dont worry though she drinks petrol now !

It must have been quite the job to turn it back to a gasoline (petrol) system from a propane (gas) system. Was there actually a petrol tank and a gas tank simultanously on the car, or did you have to swap them out?

Was it assembled in '68 with a propane system or did the "old bloke" get it converted to propane after delivery?

Sounds like an interesting history on the car.

hi , it was fitted with a gas/petrol system aftermarket not long after it was bought from the dealer .. since gas was new , once out side most metropolitan areas gas was very rare to find at a servo so you could switch from gas to petrol as you had a gas tank ( lpg) fitted in the boot and the original fuel tank . the quadrojet only needed a kit put through it as the gaskets and seals had shrunk from lack of use .. the installers recomended that you switched to fuel once a month for a few hundred miles to keep the carb servicable .
this was/is the case with most a/m gas installs ..up here in northern australia even now once you go bush ( out of town and head west ie 200-300 k's ) you soon run out of gas at servo's ..
on a funny note , when we checked the fuel tank and fuel filter , they had dust in them as it hadn't had petrol in it for over 9 years .. but the 97 liter lpg tank was still 2/4 full , luck gas doesnt go off ..lol it still run fine on the atlest 9 year old gas ! ...and yes the chook cooker bbq set up has been removed from the engine bay and it currenty hiding in the boot ..

Even here on Prince Edward Island, you have a hard time getting propane outside of the major population centres. All this talk makes me think of Mad Max/The Road Warrior!biggrin

Any more odd stuff on the car? You can get information on it (options, numbers, etc.) through GM of Canada. Thanks.

........nice to see pics of the Parisienne - looks in pretty good shape - the ID numbers are probably on a plate stamped "GM Australia" or "GM Holden" (or something similar), so Im pretty certain that a search probably wont turn up much - Ive had no luck in the past, so I'd be keen to see how you go...................

well, I finally got the old girl home . removed that ugly lpg growth out on the engine bay and boot , wow , there's some room in the engine bay now , should have taken up the mates offer of a cheap 454 ! ..lol the 327 look lonely in there ! new aluminium radiator fitted , all excess holes filled , new holley and edelbrock torker mk 1 manifold fitted , the q-jet was just totally shagged ! all that's needed now is a scrub up and paint for the inner guards and engine then I can fit all the new chrome bits , tappet covers , pulleys , alternator brackets , lead holders , master cylinder lid and the silver ceramic hugger headers .. next will be the weld pro-lite wheel I bought for her to wear ! be looking good in 15'' x 215's and 15'' x 245's , I carn't come to grips with the yank craze of fitting 18'' on the front and 20'' on the rear , lust plain stupid to me but then , i'm old school .. more pics to come when I fit the new carpet and clean up the interior ..

Nice car! Looks good with the vinyl roof. Can't say I've noticed a rear mount antenna on a full size around here. One question though. What's with the rear facing amber lights in the back bumper? Is that an Australian thing?

Australian design rules state that all motor vehicles must have amber turn signal lights on the rear and amber or white on the front ..

ok , been busy last couple of weeks . the ponti is all road legal and registered , fitted new Gabriel shocks all round , polished up the weld wheel drag-lites , finally got rid of the lpg tank in the boot , had to cut the mounts out in sections as the nuts of 2 mounting bolts had stripped , great fun ! , dumped the tow bar so now the car weighs about 100kgs less ! .lol  had to get a high pressure power assist hose made up as the original one was splitting and soft as . next will be the exhaust system , properly go with twin 2 1/2 '' pipes with the good old chevy dumper tips on the ends . new carpet and interior clean happens next week plus I hope to paint under inner guards and fire wall and motor the week after .. be looking good then .
