Adjustment of Rockhester 1 barral with heat controlled choke

I have rebuild my Rochester 1 barral carburator and in general its acting well.

But Im looking for some more power when acellerating from idle.

I need to rev it a few times to let it breath and get it running smootly and then I can roll of.

Idle is set to around 500 rpm

Mixture screw is set to higest idle after the timming was done. Sparkplugs are checked and the are burnt clean.

Timming is right on the ball at 500 rpm

Have replaced spark plugs, spark plug wires, dist. cap and rotor.

Idles perfect - has a minor poping in the exhaust at idle when engine is hot.

When enigine breakning downhill its has som backfiring trough the exhaust

This weekend I had a breakdown on the highway that was caused by a blocked fuelfilter.

Fuel was red from rust - Its been of the road for some years.

I will keep replacing filters until the fuel is clean.

Anyone know what I can do to get a smoother acceleration from idle?.

Okay - I didnt remove the pipe from the vacuum advance on the dist before setting the timming.

I will try it out - thanks!

Should I plug both the vacuum advance can and the pipe to the manifold?.

Just the pipe to the manifold , it is the vacuum source for the distributor.

if you have a piece of  vacuum hose, connect it to the vacuum advance. With a vacuum pump check under the cap to see if the advance mechanism moves.

Check the vacuum advance on the distributor, it may be stuck. And remember to adjust timing with the vacuum hose removed from the distributor. Plug the hose with a golf tee or bolt. And reconnect after timing is set.

Okay - thanks

Before I set the timing the previous time I checked with the workshop manual.
It only describes this procedure for the 8 cylinder engine.

Do you know at which rpm the vacuum advance should kick in on the 6 cylinder?.

Adjust timing for 500 rpm idle, vacuum advance starts at 8" vacuum ,full advance at 15".

I checked the timing with and without vacuum - there wasnt any difference.
Vacuum advance is working - I can see the dist is turning when reving.

Its still accelerating rough from idle and without much power.
It has minor popping at idle (500 rpm)

I was wondering if it was the dist but the timing is very steady.

Any ideas?

Thanks..

If your gas is as bad as you say, take the tank of and clean it and go from there

Distributors have mechanical and vacuum advance, if you saw no difference then maybe the vacuum advance is not working or it is connected to the wrong port or port is plugged on carburetor/manifold.

Okay.
I will take another look at the distributor/vacuum advance.
Is it both the mechanical advance and the vacuum advance that makes it turn?
I guess i will have to get me a vacuum tester...

Yes , most distributors use mechanical and vacuum advance together, mechanical advance is determined by rpm. Vacuum advance is determined by throttle position.

I believe I found the problem - a trip tomorrow will prove it.
There were 2 issues.

A small hair - properly from a brush - gave an uneven advance and next, pretty stupid, I had set the points gap way to small.
Gap was down on 0.007" = 0.25 mm.
I used the option to replace the condenser and points and start from scratch.
Timing is right on the ball at 500 rpm without vacuum advance.
Gap is set a little above 0.016" = 0.40 mm.
Max rpm on the mixture screw.

Thanks for your help
