The Younger Generation and Classic Cars

As some of you know I live in South Carolina and own one of the few Beaumonts in this part of the US. I was at a show today in a small town in Georgia. This is the first time I've had the car in this area. As usual, I got quite a few questions about the car. Very few people knew what a Beaumont was so I gave several Beaumont history lessons. About 2:00 or so a kid walked up and started talking about the car. This 11 year old kid knew exactly what a Beaumont was, knew the history of them, knew what an SD was and more. We talked about the car for 10 minutes or so. His Dad was looking at the car beside mine. The kid pointed toward his Dad and told me that he knew more about these old cars than his Dad. The kid walked away to look at other cars and his Dad came over. He just laughed and said that his kid did know more than him. He said his son is always reading magazines and reading everything he can find online about classic and muscle cars. He told me his son collects emblems off of the cars that he likes. We talked a couple more minutes and they walked on. An hour or so later I saw them again looking at other cars near me. I was so impressed by this 11 year old boy that I took the BEAUMONT emblem off of my front grill and gave it to him. At first he was so shocked that all he said was thank you. I said you're welcome and started walking away. He chased me down and told me how much he appreciated the emblem and that it would be his most cherished emblem. That really made his day. I like seeing these young guys getting involved in these cars that us older guys love so much. Sorry for the long post but I thought some here might like reading a story like this.

James

Thanks for all the nice comments. The thing that impressed me the most is that a southern US kid knew about Beaumonts.

This is my favourite story I've heard in a long time. This could be made into one of those old canadian tire commercials (you know the one with the father and the bike). On my other car what I do is I stock it full of hot wheels of my car. When I meet a special kid who is respectful and polite and appreciative of the car I will give them one. Of course the trick is finding a hot wheels version of your car.

Heartwarming and makes me hope my 8 yearold turns out like that. Back when i was 11(39 years ago) kids collected emblems also.........only difference, they used screwdrivers to pop them off at night :)

Great story James....

My sons 1st words were HotRod. At age 5 he was helping me install the tranmission in my HotRod truck. He has gown up and around it and he has the bug. And now into his own car at age 14. I am not sure if you saw my post before on my son and as proud as any dad would be I posted it... But here is article on him  Thanks for sharing the story James. There is many more stories like my sons and this kid from the states....My son would rather hear engines, than music. He knew the difference between a small block and big block at age 6. He grunts, and tells all his buddies, Smoke Tires Not Drugs. He has God in his heart, Girls in his eyes and cars on the brain 24/7, I couldnt ask for more as a dad.

When he graduated Grade 8 on Tues, he was awarded the Roy Allison Award. Upon presentation the teacher and facility concurred that' Zack is an extrmely outstanding youg man. He has leadership qualities, he is very honest, and trustworthy. He has demonstrated to overcome hurdles and has had so much personal defeats and overcome all of them (his cousins murder and my 4 brain surgeries) that he managed to come to school everyday with a smile on his face, positive attitude and enclosing"The funniest kid we ever met".  Aswell, his teacher has told me he will either do something with his hands in life or he wil be a comedian. I foresee another Tim Allen. Yes I am very one proud dad and managed to raise him with these traits 50% custody being a dad 100% of the time.  Because I beleive the story James told is not just the kid, but parenting. Spending quality time with your child and being a supportive encouraging parent. I think our kids teach us more than we teach them.

I had to smile. Last cruise night we were at together when he closed the hood on his car, he used his t shirt to wipe finger prints off. I thought him well.

It's always great to hear about young gear heads. It was very common in my age, but not now,to become obsessed with cars. Coming from a gear head family it was easy for me. Now,times & interests have changed.
