Charging issue

Hi There

I am new here and I have a problem that I hope someone will be able to help with. It has to do with the charging. When the vehicle is first started the needle show a full charge and the the needle on the meter does not stay at a steady reading. It sort of does a little dance or pulses. I have a feeling that it is either the alternator  or the voltage regulator. Thanks for any help!

Thanks I will give it a try in the morning to see if that is the issue.

While you're at it could you post a few pictures of that really nice car of yours? I'm sure we'd all like to see more of it!

Beautiful car Luppy, welcome here.

As stated, a voltmeter will tell the story. Sometimes these old gauges in our 66's are not the most accurate thing...

Welcome Gary. Very nice car! From your bio:

I have a 1966 Pontiac Parisienne 2dr hardtop that I purchased in 2007. I spent the next 5 1/2 years doing a total frame off restoration. I have done most of the repairs myself. My son and I did the body and paint. The car is a 283 with PG and a 12 bolt dif. I was able to find the original cloth for the seats at SMS in Oregon. The car was painted blue when I got it. We painted it it's original Provincal White. I have added a few options that where not on the car from the dealer. the only history that I have of the car is that it was sent to a distribution yard in Regina.

Nice car Gary alot of work that shows your atention to detail. Colour changes are alot of work well done. Your regulator uses contact points and magnetic pull to close them. Sometimes a bit of sand paper across the points to clean them up and the mechanical aspect makes them adjustable. Mine was charging too high, so a quick cleanof the points adjust the spring tension for the contact points and it now works perfect. Try for 14.2 as high charge when first started then in the 13 range later. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I tried the sandpaper but still have the pulse. Put the tester on and it was showing the pulse, as the needle did the same pulse. It is charging at a hair over 14 volts. I'm wondering if there is some sort of adjustment as there is a 1/4 inch head screw on the regulator arm. This arm sits between the two points. Any ideas???

To make things simple here are a couple of pictures of the regulator.

I had a similar problem with my 69 Laurentian. At idle the headlights would pulsate as would the volt gauge. I replaced the regulator and alternator, cleaned terminals etc. It never made any difference. Never did figure it out. I'm anxious to see if you find the reason for your issue.

Awesome ride! Check your ground straps. Should be 2 copper straps from the valve covers to the firewall. Also make sure the battery ground is, well, grounded properly. Are you having any other electrical issues?

All grounds are in place and I paid extra care to make sure that the grounds are good. I have not a single other electrical issue with the car. Everything is working as it should. Thought that I would add a couple of interior shots. I know someone will be interested.

Condition of the rest of the wires? Do they have a green coating on them? Hmm, what's your idle speed? Glazed belt? slipping at idle?

By green coating I assume that you mean oxidation on the wire? Before I put anything back together I went though it and cleaned all the connection. My idle speed is 1100 rpm in park and about 700 rpm in drive. The glazed belt I will have to check. Tonight when I was out at the usual Friday night show I thought I did hear a bit  of a squeal. Thanks for all the help. I am determined to get this right.

Oxidation is what I was getting at.

On my car the regulator goes blue brown then black on the bottom of the regulator...the black is from the condenser, I noticed your's isn't hooked up and doesn't have a wire.

And that ground that's siamesed with the condenser goes to the middle bolt of the washer tank hold down.

that car of yours is a favorite of mine. Never seen one  with so few miles on it and with the 396, unbelievable.

I was of the impression that the condenser was just to stop the interference on the radio. I was going to go and buy a new regulator tomorrow but I might try the condenser first. I did recheck the ground to the regulator and found that it was a little corrodide so cleaned it up and checked the point at the washer bottle. Still have the dancing gauge.
