First Shakedown with the 66 Grande!

Oh boy! Now that I have solved my tranny problems (rather expensively but lets just leave it at that ok) I took it to the big E yesterday and back today and am really glad to report other than a rough idle and one back light that doesn't light it was snag free.  Also chewed the miles up like a bugger.  Seems to like sitting at about 80 mph with the 700 R4 in OD but at 100 klicks I was actually getting 21 miles per imperial gallon , which for a bored out 396 is pretty darn good.

Ready for the big Saskatchewan/Manitoba cruise once I stick a trailer hitch on it!  Just had to tell someone guys!  Heres a shot of it and a couple of other forum guys rides sitting at the Alberta Iron Indians show and rain event today.

That's great Ken and it look terrific there in the photo. I'm surprised that GM Canada has not demanded that dealer to place the proper signage on there but on the positive side its good to see Pontiac name and arrowhead.

Totally agree!   I suspect the dealer just told them to stuff it.  It sure is good to see!

Thanks! Pretty pumped alright. I 've had the car for ten years and worked on it for 5.  Sometimes I really lost the motivation but it has been all worth it once you pass a few guys on the highway and watch them smile and give you the thumbs up as you go by. I'll be driving the heck out of it from now until it gets too wintery.  Still have to get the AC working and a couple of seats redone for next year but for now its pretty good!

Thanks for the good wishes guys!  It was a blast except for the weather.  Sure are a lot of nice Ponchos out there. Nice to finally join them. Just goes to show you should never give up on it. I give credit to this forum and the guys on it (you know who you are) for keeping my motivation up.

Its still a work on progress, at least now I can take it for a legal cruise!

Now the next projects:  Electric 1938 Willys and 1959 International ex Alberta Forest Service 4x4.

Ken, Here's another photo of your GP. 66, 7, and 8 in a row. Not all GP's but cool none the less. Was nice to chat again. Hope that interior lead works out for you. Oh, by the way, where were you at the end? The only car in the lot was the GP and no Ken to be found.

Good to see you are out there and on the road Ken. Lots of enjoyment ahead. I think you are in the ideal situation. You have a car you can drive and take to a show if you want plus when you want to wrench you have a project or two to keep you occupied.

Thanks again guys.  Yup, I am a lucky guy alright. No end of fun and frustration but they do go hand in hand.  You never really appreciate when things go well unless they've gone bad for you as well.  As for the background thats Perrys Projects back yard out of Gibbons, AB.  He has a website and some pretty neat stuff he is motivated to sell.  One thing that has always tempted me is the 58 Pathfinder two door wagon in his inventory.  Check out the site.  Hes  conflicted like the rest of us.  Hes in the business because he loves cars but he has to make a living selling them too.

As for the tranny I don't mind sharing my folly if thats what it was.  I took it back to the shop I bought the tranny from about 5 years ago.  Of course there was no warranty anymore ever though i only had about 30 miles on it all in 1st and second gear.

I got busy at work and could only deal with them over the phone and had to send my brother to pick it up.  According to the invoice they had to take it out and rebuild the 3 and 4th gear clutch packs as I had apparently not adjusted the TV cable correctly. That may be but I also was told that they replaced the valve body when I phoned about two weeks into the job so what actually happened is known only to them.

it works great now although I have yet to set up the lockup. I don't know how much better it could work as I checked mileage again today and it's right at 21 MPG again.  It shifts out of first and second very quickly with the old Powerglide shift quadrant set to Drive so I think I'm going to get the kit that CS1965 showed me on saturday that modifies the console to allow access to all four gears manually.  Should be a lot more fun!

Thanks! I'll check it out over the winter.  Actually Ivan Perry talked me into keeping dry by going to one of the antique malls in Strathcona.  It was kindof sudden but it sure seemed like a good idea.  Luckily i was able to keep my hand off my wallet mostly. Lots of cool stuff but no bargains to be had.

I waas glad to see it still there when I got back thats for sure!

 I'd ask for that sign.

Great line up of Pontiacs outside the front door!

Hi Ken

Happy motoring with that great looking Grande of yours. I have followed the work that you have done over the last few months, so it is great to see it on the road. I noticed in the picture that you have not installed the skirts. I know that you were a little undecided as to whether the skirts or the stainless moldings. Nice to have all those horses under the hood when they are required. Lots of happy motoring to you.

Thanks for the good wishes!  I wish you hadn't asked me about the skirts because it's a bit more complicated than just deciding not to use them and makes me look kind of dumb to boot.  What happened is when I rebuilt the rear wheel opening on the drivers side I didn't bother to check it against the skirt for fitment. It looked right but It turned out that I had made it smaller by about 1/4 inch so I can't actually get the skirt to fit.  (Head smack when I noticed that I'll tell ya!  The passenger skirt fits fine though so I can actually only run one side until I  reshape the drivers skirt  to fit.  I think that will be easier to do and easier to reapaint than trying to adjust and repaint the wheel opening.  Plus i have one or two spare skirts in case I screw up.

One of those dumb moments that you shouldn't do. It'll be a winter fix I think.
