another one finds its way home

So this story starts a good six months ago when I was looking on kijiji and spotted another old Pontiac. It disappeared and I figured it had sold,so kind of forgot about it.Fast forward to about a month ago.I was driving the 54 and stopped by the local bank.I came out and found a guy taking pics of my car.Turns out it was a friend I deal with almost daily at the local parts supplier. This is yours?he asked yep and so a good half hour discussion ensued. Then he says I have a couple old Pontiacs as well sitting out on my dads farm.I had the one for sale awhile ago.The red on on kijiji I asked?Yes actually.Well today I finally got a chance to go out and see what he had.Now or soon to be,i am the new owner of another old poncho.Payment arrangements have been made and he is very happy to see the car go to me.So here she is,a very solid another Canadian 1949 Pontiac more door.model number 22-69,serial 9226916052,engine w102157,body serial 2559,trim 410,paint 902.Apparently the previous owner found it stored in an old grainery and had started to fix it up and put it back on the road.Paint is 98% there,it is a 3 on the tree, complete interior not in too bad of shape. It almost looks like someone put sheets over the original door panels. It has a visor, skirts, whitewalls. The dash is all complete. It comes with about ten boxes of misc parts. It looks like they stripped the engine back to the block, repainted it and started reassembly before they got sidetracked along the way.So now I have a project while the 54 is out getting the body panels and interior redone.Any help on the plate breakdown guys?As you can see the skirts and visor have been polished out and I think the rest of the car will come back as well. Also back in the trees we came across another Pontiac wagon,61-63 ish I believe.Inline 6 under the hood with an automatic. Not terrible by any means.Maybe a good nostalgia push car if I ever get the slingshot dragster back going.Ok I guess this makes me certifiable Pontiac crazy.

First thing comes to mind - Barnfind. If you can get her running, a good polish job and you are on the road. Very nice find.

as you can see there is a car show plaque on the dash from 1999.That was the year they found it in the grainery, pulled it out and drove it to the car show that year. They then took it home and started the cleanup and restoration before they lost motivation. So hopefully seeing as it ran and drove then it should with some work drive again.

does anyone know what the 902 paint code transfers to?kind of curious if it is actually the original color or should it be two tone.I filled out my paperwork for a gm history report and will send it off on Monday.

Went out today and loaded up the 49 and brought it to the shop.A bit dark for pics by the time it was unloaded but more to come. One thing I did notice is they painted the block silver but I think it should be the same Pontiac green as my 54 correct? Also had a closer look at the 59 wagon sitting out there,so tempting.

I got my driver's licence on a 50 Chev version of this car back in 1966, and I could have used that green turn signal from your car.

Although I could have driven a automatic vehicle to get the licence, the word was that the  old tester at the Licence Bureau in Sudbury

was much harder on "automatics" than  "standard". So I borrowed my buddy's 50 Chev to do the test.

The test was going well to a point where the tester told me to make a immediate right on a road just after crossing some railroad tracks. The tracks grade was up higher than the road,

and I couldn't see the road to the right while approaching the tracks.

As I got higher onto the tracks I  realized the road really was immediately after the tracks,I quickly downshift on the slope going down,

at the same time sticking my arm out to indicate a right turn (no turn signals) and trying to turn the non power steering with the other hand to the right,

and trying to brake into the corner with the non-power brakes. It was like trying to rub your belly and pat yourself on the head at the same time.

Seemed I needed one more limb to accomplish the task.

At the bureau,he said I did pretty good,...except at the railroad track, he said  I had " improper use of controls". Geez!

I just stared at him.....there was a pause (I think he was expecting me to mouth off at him) and then he said "but I'll let it go"

So I got my licence.

Great car, good luck with the restoration.

well heres some more pics. The car was running and driving in 1996.It was then parked and they started removing cleaning and repainting parts. So far the floors, trunk, inner fenders, etc seem to be remarkably solid. It had some sort of rubber undercoating on the entire bottom of the car and fenderwells.Probably about 80% is still there. If you peel it off the metal is almost new underneath. The trunk is good except for the resident mouse and his leftovers.Cleaned out the entire car and left a couple traps for him tonite.Thankfully he has not gotton into the seats,at least the rear as the original burlap underside is intact. The seats may not even be so bad with a good steam cleaning.Someone has done some creative wiring at the rear using old extension cords,i assume to get the taillights working. So far really happy with what i'm finding, boxes of newly painted and powdercoated parts, lots of spare parts including a transmission. Not too happy they painted some parts including the block silver but not a hard fix.The rubber will need updating, good old bias ply h78-15's.A bunch of reassembly then cleaning up the original paint, you can see where they started, hopefully the rest of the car will polish up that nice.Enjoy the pics.

That seems typical for mice, at least in Manitoba. If you see one, there's pretty much guaranteed at least one or two more.

Sure hope NOS can help you out.

Mouse number 5 this morning, nothing more so far.I think he was the smart one since he got the peanut butter off the first trap twice without it snapping but finally got him by the tail in the second trap.Reset them but so far no more. The car was running and driving in 1996,looks like they took it all apart and started repainting everything.I will probably pull the motor again to repaint it the correct green, then hopefully a matter of reassembly I hope. They did some creative wiring using extension cords to get the taillights working so may need to source some of the fabric coated wire and/or a new wiring harness.Have to see how bad they tinkered.looks like they put in a new turn signal switch as well.

Well a couple days and no more victims so think I got them all now.Today I pulled out the seats, got my request in to sms for some samples.Funny the original door panels have been covered in white fabric at one point.Pretty simple to redo if I can get the fabric and some new backer board. Also going to be on the hunt for a new package tray, new kick panels and new carpet.I think it was originally grey. The dash looks to be dark grey, original fabric came back as 410 taupe striped pile fabric.Worse comes to worse I could get sms to make them as they are making a set for the 54 right now.Not cheap at 900.00 a set though.I have a local gut that could redo the seats if I get the fabric.A few hours with the wire wheel and the vacuum and the floors look pretty decent.Next will be to get it in the shop and pull the motor so I can paint it the proper color.I also am contemplating respraying the entire car.I will have to go and find the paint codes for 902 whiltshire maroon and have it mixed locally. The paint polishes up not too bad but lots of scratches and nicks.Boy getting myself into it now as I am already taking the 54 apart for it repaint and body work.Looks like this one will be just a matter of pulling the trim, windows(needs new seals and a new ps front windshield anyways). No bodywork other than a couple minor dings but no rot anywhere on the car so far.

Progress?it stared out to be just taking the motor out for the right color of paint. Then I decided to wire brush the entire frame and underbody. Then I started noticing all the little pits and scratches so instead of just a buff job it is now getting an entire paint job.So off comes all the chrome, all the window rubbers are shot so out comes all the glass.By the way anybody know of a source for a new windshield for this old girl.Decided might as well replace all the corner and vent window gaskets as well. The good news is it needs very little body work,a little ding on the hood and maybe a dime size spot of rot on the d.s rear fender.Almost ready for a sand down, motor is all repainted and sitting to go back in.A little every day after work, maybe two hours a night and its getting done.I think the biggest challenge will be finding all the clips that hold the trim on as a lot of them broke when the trim came off.I did get a package from sms auto fabrics and they have the seat fabric although they sent the wrong color.A quick email hopefully will get me the right stuff. Not quite sure how much fabric it takes to do a seat but a 75.00 a yard its going to get expensive.

Aside from our sponsors I would think Chevs of the 40's.

www.chevsofthe40s.com/

Just a thought, as I have never dealt with them so I can't comment on customer service or quality of supply.

Well after a month or so of weeknights and a day or two on the weekends heres where she sits.Disassembled, about 90% sanded down and hopefully ready for primer by Christmas.I ended up taking a lot more apart then I first planned but no major issues yet.Lots of days surfing the net for needed parts and about 1000.00 spent so far.I just did another order to ecklers and probably will be into the car for about 4000.00 in parts when all added up.I still have to order new carpet, find either door panels or someone to make new ones,a new rear package tray, kick panels etc.Hoping NOS can help me out as I would rather deal with them then from the states although I've talked with the company who does all ecklers stuff and they can make new door panels if I send them my old ones.I am still a little confused on the whole paint process as it has been a few years since I've painted any cars and there seems to be a ton of new stuff out there. So far I have the whole car sanded with 180 grit on a da sander.I have a few bare metal spots so I am planning to use epoxy primer and then 2k high build primer, final block sanding then paint.I am kind of disappointed with my local paint suppliers,so far none of them have a code for the whiltshire maroon but say they can match it if I bring in a panel. One big paint warehouse will only sell to me if I bring in a panel, have it matched,go back to my local NAPA and then order the paint through them with my mechanics account.Auto color library has my paint in stock and will ship everything I need for under 300.00 so that may be the way to go.Anyways progress continues.
