1966 Pontiac Beaumont Restoration


I think its time for the restoration of my 1966 Pontiac Beaumont Sport Deluxe Convertible. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a reputable restoration shop in southern Ontario. I would love to know if there are any shops that allow you to participate in the process. I'm  thinking of a frame off restoration. The car will not need any body work other than being sanded and repainted. For those of you that do not know y car it has only 17,565 original miles.

Before everyone starts chiming in about the merits of keeping it completely original, it may be worth noting that Jack did a repaint a number of years ago. (A very cool history on this unique car is detailed when it was a feature car here on the site a while back.)

17,000 miles   original with one re-paint    sounds beautiful        

 

I was going to ask why you would spend 40,000 doing a frame off?

NOS at the top of the page for the interior kit,  my recommendation is a kit made my Legendary Interiors, I have used 2 of their interiors, and am very impressed with the quality.

my 2 cents...guess I'm up to 4 cents now!

Legendary seems to be the most highly recommended. I went with PUI and am happy with the product. Seat skins are the same as the 66 Chevelle. If you require door panels, be careful not to get the Chevelle ones as they are different (horizontal vs vertical.) I picked up my carpet from NOS. Happy with the product (not so much with my installation).

 

PS  Depending on the interior colour, there are some skins available in leather.

The reason I'm thinking of doing this is because when I purchased it 30 + years ago I had very little spare cash so I did some work on it but 30 + years later the interior has dried out , brakes are still original as well as many other parts and rather than just replace the parts that should be replaced I'm thinking of redoing it from the ground up.

Only caveat with a full blown resto. It'll be to nice to take out for fear of damage, even the slightest.

I'm on the maintain and preserve for this one.

good for the economy      

with only 17,000 on a 47 year old car   sounds like it doesn't get driven anyway  

 I be terrified to own a fresh paint restoration  I'd never drive it anywhere.... ever

Well Jack - heres the appraiser's opinion - and this guy knows that car --- its great just the way it is ! -- at best have someone put an interior kit in it --- as for resto shop 905 714 fast , Tony just completed an awesome restoration on a 70 GTO rag

I hear you re the interior. New foam... new skins... new carpet... inexpensive and makes all the difference in the world.
I too have the drum brakes and I gotta say... knock on wood... no concerns to date. (Other than ensuring that the new car in front of me with the stop-on-a-dime-brakes is a safe distance ahead.) A Detroit Speed suspension... that would be nice.

an interior kit, replace the rubbers, even a complete front end rebuild kit with the addition of disc brakes if you desire .. ( althogh you'd have to change to a dual resevoir )

As for the paint.... wouldn't touch it.   look up x-kote, I had my 64 custom sport done.. I was pretty much at the point of it needing a re paint.. single stage acrylic enamel done in 1987..  ABSOLUTELY Amazing !  $500 to do my car.

Thanks for all of your comments. They are making me think about what I will do. I  think I will take your advise and begin with putting in an interior kit and have a mechanic check out the breaks. The car has never seen a mechanic. That's like us never seeing a doctor. LOL. Who would you recommend to get the best original interior kit.

I have always loved your car. It looks like a completely stock, unmolested version of a rare and desirable model. Because of that, if it were me I wouldn't change that car other than the interior kit you speak of. Also, keep all the old parts if anything gets changed out. The 1966 Sport Deluxe uses GTO / Lemans door panels but Chevelle Malibu / SS seat upholstery.

I would also hesitate to simply take it to any old place for a so-called restoration. For a car of your caliber it should be done by real pros that will perform a forensic disassembly. When you look at how deeply a quality restoration takes into account the original markings, paint dabs, spring tags and so on, to simply blast, prime and paint will lose all those original details that are probably still present on your car. Even the way the sound deadener was sprayed on the inside or the quarter panels are unique on the Canadian cars, and to see it original or at least restored authentically makes a real impression.

Unless the car has creeping rust or festering seams you might be best advised to preserve and maintain the car rather than redo everything.

 Just put  Legendary seats covers - the old and the newOriginal rear seat from 1966 Coronet.JPGNewly recovered legendary seat  covers for 66 Coronet.JPGin a 66 Coronet 2 door hardtop the past weekend.....just like the original on size and quality.Excellent and made in the good old U.S.A

A word of warning, I don't believe this is the case re the interior door panels.  My understanding is that Beaumont are indeed exclusive.  The others will fit, but I do not believe that ther are correct.

I cringe thinking Jack would think it needs paint - the car was done in laquer by Moe Roy/Larry Young around 1980 and looks fantastic ! The interior was sewn covers at the time so I would suggest to replace that and the carpet (nice ones are now available) still has original paint in the trunk !, the undercarriage appears painted in tremclad but still looks great, the engine looks just fine --- restoring it would mess it up - the chrome is amazing etc... it has got to be one of the best out there
