Enough of pouring green stuff in to Impala

A few weeks ago I made a trip to Ottawa area and stayed overnight at a B&B. Next morning I checked the rad and found it low AGAIN...  Kept a watchful eye on the temp guage and nothing to get concerned about. 

topped it up with a few litres of green stuff and set off for home.   When I got home and it had cooled off I checked it again to find it low on green stuff....

 

No loss in performance, nothing unusual, just the loss of coolant. 

 

During the summer I had the rad replaced and went into Toronto a couple of times and got stuck in gridlock.  With one eye on the temp guage it got really hot.  Another evening went to the Jazz Festival in Toronto and they traffic wasnt even moving.  The temp went out of site,  Found a parking spot and left the car.  When I returned the coolant was low but I was getting some circulation. 

From that point on the coolant had to be checked often.

 

Now the car is on the hook and going to get the engine checked out....  Might be a rebuild, might be a Crate engine.

Time will tell 

Found this shop in Markham completely by accident...  Was looking for a shop with a dyno that could build me an engine and run it in on the dyno. The shop I hoped to spec out only did BMW and other high end motors.

Continued along Bullock Drive and happened to see a Packard sitting in front of a shop,, upon closer look I saw a 67Chev Impala Convertible, a 427  Corvette,  a Lotus Europa and a few other toys. 

I went into the shop and the place is loaded with classics.

Took the car in today and did a iittle nostalgia, bench racing and got to get an opinion on the car.  

Will leave it for a few days so Doug Lamb can go over it and find out if it just a blown gasket, a cracked head or worse a lesion in the block...

 

Next possiblity is a Crate engine.

What did the engine oil look like? If she's ingesting coolant the oil would be milky.

You didn't smell anything sweet? Like hot antifreeze?

Keep us posted on the mechanics findings.

I checked the oil, it was changed before I left for Ottawa and all is fine.

Inside of the rad is clean? If so, I would hazard a pin hole in a heater/rad hose or the heater core that just pee's when full hot.

If it's not in the oil or on the ground, it pretty well has to be going out the exhaust and then yes, it should smell sweet.

Had a similar issue with my 79 Caprice.....ended up being a hole in one of the frost plugs.

Never left a puddle,burned off the exhaust manifold,never  seen a trace of it.

Changed the porus frost plug and the issue ended.

That florescent dye for leaks works well for this sort of thing. With Halloween close, black light bulbs are easy to find. Load one into an old incandescent worklamp and voila. Just remember to fix the leak already ... or the next time you turn on that light .... CSI blood bath.

if you get a crate motor (engine)  make sure its big enough

Got the word today. The cylinder head on the right side has a blown head gasket.

Ordered the crate motor, will use some of the parts off the current engine. Intake, my aluminum rocker covers, carb (Edelbrock 1406) etc, am also going to go with a bigger 2 wire alternator, placing it on the right side, a new HEI distributor. Will need a new damper as the crate motor does not come with that.

Crate motor should be in at Exceltec by Thursday.

The cylinder heads had been machined with the original rebuild and then again a couple of years ago. Not much left to machine
This way I get the 3 year 50.000 km warranty.

Hi,

Just wondering if the car still has the original engine..and if so why you don't look at either aftermarket heads..or a good set of core heads you could rebuild...if it's not the original engine to the car then I understand getting a crate engine..but if it is.....

I'm taking it's a 350 Cliff... probably a good decision overall. Quick and easy.

If the 283 is original to that body, will you keep it, or will it go to exchange?

And you are going with an internally regulated alternator, a "SI"? And to be mounted on the right?

Mark: No decision on the 283 yet as it must have a cracked head.

Got about 300 miles on it now and it is running real sweet.

Pulls good. Hope to get more miles on before winter storage.
