M20 or M21

Small world story wink

In 1971 I bought a Ventura II  307 speed...  Friend  John, here in Clinton, owned a rusty 66 L79 Chevy II   I bought the M20 out of it, for 200.00 biggrin

John sold the 66 L 79 shell to Friend Doug  (in about 1971-2)....

40 years later...  John is restoring a 66 L79 Acadian biggrin  and Doug still has 66 L79 Chevy II hardtop (just went to Clinton Auto Body for restoration)

Doug owns the building I store 2 vehicles in...

Today I see Doug in Post office, and ask if he has a trans for his car?   answer NO

I ask him if he wants to trade my 1969 M20 for some storage fees..(like a whole year)

He says he will think about it

Steve Johns (guru) tells him he needs a M21 ??     tonight the light came on !  I bought the original trans and it was in my 307 car and was a M20

Why would a restorer tell him to get a M21 for a 3:36 rear car ??

just wondering     Carl

A well know tranny builder in the Okanagan told me an M20 with the larger 1" output shaft was the ideal tranny for rear end gearing between 3:36 to 3:73. Anything beyond that M21

Hi Carl, it should be an M20 for a '66 Acadian.

Some people automatically assume the close ratio M21's are somehow better. They work fine with 4.11's or 4.56's but as Carl mentioned, an M21 is not a good transmission for a car with 3.36 gears. The high first gear coupled with a high rear end gear would make the car very sluggish off the line.

I ran an M21 in my 66 327 Nova with 3.73 and as stated, that was fine.
