Replacing Fuel Tank Sending Unit

So,

I bought a new sending unit, ($105 taxes in) and I'm wondering other than syphoning the gas out of the tank is it very difficult?  I'm thinking I should replace the insulators for the tank straps.. anything else I should be prepared to replace?  If anyone else has done this repair I'd appreciate any insight you have...thanks!

Did it come with a new lock ring and o ring?

I replaced the insulators with tar paper I had left from a roofing job. Very similar texture/material.

Basically support the tank with something, undo the nuts that hold the straps in place, lower tank, tap the ring on tabbed areas (you'll see them) alternating the tabs that you hit so you don't just force the ring to one side of the opening. It you keep hitting the same tab over and over the ring won't want to rotate like it needs to do to be removed. Pretty basic job but not a great one to do if you have an attached garage (stinky)

Well,

I haven't opened the box yet so I'm not sure if there is a lock ring and O ring..

My garage is attached, but I'll probably wait until it's warm enough so I can open the garage door. Thanks for the tips though Carl!!

they make a cheap tool to remove sending units from gas tanks-makes it really simple. It is a wrench specifically for sending units

Is the unit on top or rear of the tank?

Have you opened the box yet ? Is the tank Full or MT ? If full, I used a piece of plywood with a bolt to hold to the floor jack and then lowerd enough to change the sending unit ( if it's ontop ). You might have to undo the fuel filler neck if it's its on the top. Hope it helps.

If its on the back(front) of the tank,it's really easy.Just jack up the front of the car so the fuel flows to the back of the tank and then simply remove the unit along with the new rubber seal. Easy-peasy.Within a half an hr you're done. I had to do the exact same thing on the 'Chief just before I sold it.

For 67, the fuel tank sending unit should be on the top, just like my 70.   I know Rick (67rag396) had a spare tank laying around his shop, and it was on the top.   You'll need to completely remove the tank and put it on the ground.   There will likely be a bunch of grit on top which will need to be brushed away before you can loosen the retaining ring.

Empty the tank, drop it right out, and spruce the whole tank up while you are at it (the hanging straps and fuel line also if needed). Don't take short cuts, and do it right while you are there.

Soak the strap nuts in the best penetrating lube you've got. Acetone/ATF is my personal recommendation. Snapping those bolts off .... really not fun for the kids you've got holding the darn tank up. Memories so vivid that I bought a jack like this www.ebay.com/itm/1500-Lb-Lightweight-Aluminum-Motorcycle-or-ATV-Lift-Jack-Stand-/141170408719 to ensure I never have to repeat the performance. With one of these, draining the fuel is more or less optional. You'll still want another warm body to help stabilize and guide it down ... but that person is going to be a whole lot happier. (Mine was $60 on sale)

Hell, while your at it, why not throw another $350 at her, and spring for a shiny new Spectra tank. biggrin

If your tank is original and never had been cleaned, it'll probably have a heck of lot of crap in it. How do your fuel filters look inside?

When I siphoned mine out, I tie wired a hose straight down a broom handle, that way I could get right at the lowest part of the tank. What came out looked like PEI mud!

OK,

So the tank is still in the car, as like I said it's still too cold here to work in the garage. I will clean it up before reinstalling it with at minimum new insulators if not all new straps as well....when the time comes to syphon it and then drop it.. until then I have no idea where the sending unit is...

The tank represented here should be nearly identical to your 67 B Body CP tank.

This one is 67 Impala.
