In reading these posts I thought I would jump in and offer my thoughts. I recognize that modifying the steering is up to the individual and what is to be done with the car, however in my case I tend to agree with 427 Carl. My 62 Pontiac has factory power steering with a tight front end. For the type of driving that I do this 52 year old car has no issues in the way it handles. It is straight as an arrow cruising at or above highway speeds. I guess its also about memories too. These were the cars I grew up around in high school and I actually liked spinning that wheel with my baby finger (and I still do). Yes, there isn.t much feel at highway speeds so you need to pay attention. On the other hand our Camry has sport steering which is quick and you need to pay just as much attention to it. It takes minimal movement to put you in the other lane. My car also has power brakes with new drums, new shoes, and a rebuilt booster. There is nothing wrong with the way it stops. Granted, I wouldn't want to make 3 panic stops in a row and if I lived in the mountains I would have disc brakes but here in the prairies, so far, I see no reason to convert. In my case, a rebuild of what was already there was all it took to make me happy.
