1962 Acadian Beaumont Convertible find

A guy I work with has what I thought was a nova convertible for sale  turns out it's a beaumont. He needs a resto job the car was bought used in 63 and has been in the owners family ever since. it's white with a new white top,red interior buckets no console.rebuilt 250-6 but otherwise unmolested needs floor work ,rockers, fenders, lower cowls and rear quarter Panels. He has all the original trim so I won't have to track that down. I've got a couple of questions

1) what are the plates in the rear bumper for?(my guess is reverse lights like the 65 nova but the owner says they're not )

2) how close to a nova is the interior (Mickey and his buddies have been busy)

as soon as the snow's gone I'll have a good look at it (only seen phone pics )and I'll post some pics then

you are correct, they are plates to cover up holes in bumpers for back-up lights but i think the bumper is from 63-64 do not think 62 had back-up lights

makes it easier to find a bumper (same as Nova)

interiors for acadians are different from Nova's but that is all you have to choose from.

Welcome here Dave.

The first thing to look at on this car, because it's a convertible unibody, is the inner rocker panels. These cars are notorious for rusty inner rockers and they are the structure for the entire car. Check how both front doors open and close. When those rockers rot, the body sags and the doors won't work properly. A car with rusty rockers is a HUGE restoration task.

So a 62 doesn't have reverse lights? were they an option and that is why it has block off plates?

judging from pics i found they were not an option till 63, so no blanks in 62,
a stock nova rear bumper will fit fine..

So either the car is 63 or someone put a bumper off a 63. Now I REALLY want the snow gone so I can evict Mickey and friends and have a good look.

your plate on the fire wall should tell if it is 62 or 63

someone here should know what else to tell

The 1962 Acadian Beaumont did come with reverse back up lights they were in the trunk lid one year only, then in 1963 they moved them to the rear bumper one year only, so your bumper is off a 1963.

My 1962 shop manual light brown in color (I believe shows) the reverse lights set up but its out with my car in Hefley Creek but if I have time and think of it tomorrow when I go out to give them another cash injection I'll take a picture of the page.

My car came with them in the trunk lid already but I was lucky to find a NOS pair on e-bay several years ago I'll send you a picture of my old ones Lucky, and you can show them on here as I have a hard time posting pictures from my computer or phone I'm to old I guess can't seem to do it.

The only numbers I can find on the glass lens is Guide 3Z, SAE R 62, on the metal housing Guide 3Z, SAE R 62 Made in USA, The chrome bezels I had re-chromed so no numbers left if there ever was any. I'll check my other NOS set out with my car see if they produce anything.

I think you are looking in the wrong place to authenticate these lights.  This trunk lid was used from 1962 to 64.  I doubt very much GM stamped a unique lid with holes for the back up lights in Acadian models, (cars with that option).  We know they didn't come on all cars.  I have owned at least 3 1962 cars without the back up lights.

In my opinion, you need to look at the wiring harness.  If the back up wires, appear to be part of the factory built harness, then I would conclude they were an original option.  Do they share a common ground with the taillights?  If the backup leads appear to be a plug in harness, I would think it was a dealer option.  The wires would need to be activated by the trans being shifted into reverse and I'm not sure where that connection is made.  One additional thought is, they were a mid year addition if the build dates are all late in the model run.

I really think they were a dealer installed item.  Just as the side (door) mirror.  We know the Acadians did not come with side mirrors on the doors or anywhere else.  If the buyer wanted a mirror on the drivers side, door or fender, we know the dealers had some in the parts dept. and they installed a mirror.  The buyer also may have installed his or her own mirror.  I don't think the lights or lens tell us anything because the dealers or GM may have stipulated a light assembly that was used primarily on other models, to be used in adding back up lights to the Acadian.

good idea, but the wiring harness diagrams show backup lights so all wiring might have been there but good check point.
especially the connector or casting number

1962 acadian.jpgI went out to my car today but no numbers on the Bezel and I couldn't find anything for pictures in the parts books but they did list part numbers for Bezel, back up lamp - 62, 2 x 5952947 - all 1962 housing back up lamp 2 x 5953418, socket back up lamp wire 2971872, lens back up lamp 2 x 5952946.
I also found another picture of a convertible with them so they were around in 1962 like mentioned maybe an option

For the year of car look at drivers side hinge pillar. 1962 starts with 2, 1963 starts with 3. Reverse lights in 1962 were a dealer installed option. The rear bumper with reverse light openings were the same in 1963 and 1964. I have been around these and other GM cars since the late 1960's so I have a vast knowledge of all things sixties and early seventies GM. Having owned 28 X-bodies mostly in the early seventies, I know these cars quite well. I have seen a great deal of misinformation printed over the years by people who may be too young to know better.
Even though I have owned some A-bodies, I know much less about them.
