update on the 49 fleetleader

Well looks like spring may finally be arriving, been above zero every day this week, even had the shop doors open for a few of them.Anyways back in octoberish I purchased a 40 fleetleader special 6 sedan from a buddy and throughout the winter I have been working on it and buying parts. At first I was just going to pull the motor and trans to repaint it the proper Pontiac green. Then as the front end came apart I knew I had a bunch of chrome to polish up.Then out came the interior and the search for the right fabric to redo it back to stock. Then the doors came off, etc, etc and pretty soon I decided just to do an entire repaint of the car along the way.So sanded the entire car down with 120 and then 180 paper.Put the car into epoxy primer and then went over the car to find any chips, scratches, etc.Filled them all in and resanded entire car with 220.Then I went and bought high build primer sealer and shot the whole car again and again went over the car looking for pits I missed.sanded the car again with 320,block sanding the best I could with my durablocks and guide coat.Boy these old round cars are a challenge to block sand.So now using the same product but adding more reducer I am spraying the car again as a sealer coat. Then going to sand the entire car again with 500 or 600 grit. Finally it should be ready for paint next weekend.I am going in tomorrow to buy the paint(whiltshire maroon) and a bit of the gray I need for the interior window trims. Then hopefully onto colr sanding and buffing and finally re assembly. The fols at ecklers and national chevy have become close friends as I have made about 12 separate orders for almost every replacement part they make for these cars.Every window and door rubber, channel kits, trunk rubber, evry gasket, rubber bumper, etc.Door handles, window cranks the list is endless.Along with a lot of nights on ebay searching for parts which gave me a new exhaust, the original rock guards in chrome instead of rubber, front rocker guards, new rocker trim, clips even a set of original seat covers in case I can't clean the old seats to my satisfaction or get them quite done this year. The interior is cleaned out, floor repainted, going to be dynamited after the car is painted, new headliner, kick panels, package tray.I still have to get the carpet and windlace soon.As well still trying to find the original grey chevron fabric and grey vinyl for the doors.sms finally got me the right color and pattern seat fabric after 3 tries but they either forgot the door fabric or don't have it,i will have to mail them a sample piece.Anyways a lot of work to do,a few more big pieces to get like new bumpers(found an original rear bumperette and crossbar setup for it)and finally a new set of whitewall tires in radials instead of the old bias plys that are on it.I hoping to have it done for the end of may if time allows.Wish me luck

On the weekend I made the trip into Calgary and picked up the paint for the car.We had a bit of trouble finding it so eventually they just custom matched it off the fenderskirt I brought along.Hopefully it will turn out ok as I was planning nit to repaint the skirts or visor since their in such good shape. But if the color is slightly off I may end up redoing those as well. The original color is whiltshire maroon or poly wine as they call it on the us chips.Interior is Sheffield gray, not sure what the Canadian name for that one is.Anyways managed to spend a few hours on her and got the rocker guard sprayed on.Today after work I sprayed the rockers, inner doors and trunk lid with the final coat of primer/sealer.Later this wekk I will do the outer doors and rest of the car in the sealer as well. Then a bunch more sanding and finally maybe paint this wekkend or next week sometime after work.

Before spraying the sealer make sure it is not a time sensitive product. When we painted my 57 the sealer we used had to be painted over with in 12 hours. We had a issue with the paint and it did not get sprayed for 48 hours and the paint didn't adhere properly and chips very easy. You may already know this but I just don't want someone to have the same problems I do. It is very upsetting when you put a lot of time and money it to something and it does not turn out.

I.m using Valspar products so should be ok.Since they had to custom mix and natch my color they actually ended up giving me an industrial urethane so should be tough if nothing else.I still have to sand the sealer with 600 grit before paint. It is a high build primer sealer all in one but when you use it as your final sealer you thin it more at 4 to 1 to 1 instead of 4 to 1 to less than 10% as a high build.

Wow..   thats the first time I have seen a maroon one with visor and skirts

My Dad had one, and Christmas day 1959, we drove into a square beamed bridge outside Sackville N.B.

got the car about 1/4 way in before it stopped..   I smashed the windshield...   loved that car....

After 5 hours of spraying the 49 is back in color.Lots of color sanding to do but put on 5 coats of industrial polyurethane so should be tough enough. The color is a little more purple than I expected but as close as they could match it.If worse comes to worse I will scuff down the fender skirts and visor and repaint them as well.

Out of curiosity, where are you going to source your door and window rubbers and gaskets?

Btw our cars look pretty similar.

most of my rubbers I got from ecklers early chevy, some from national chevy association(they have a kit that has all the window fuzzies and channel trim in one package)and a bit from chevs of the forties.I still have to get carpet which will come from nos and new windshields.I'll warn you now rubber is expensive and I have replaced evry rubber piece on the car from door gaskets down to taillight gaskets.I probably have 4-5 thousand just inparts to go back on the car and still have a bit more to buy yet.

well a b bit of an issue folks. As you can see in the pictures some of the panels had a lot of orange peel in them.I tried color sanding it out but it is just too bad on some panels.A combination of a new type of paint, probably a bit cold in the shop and my inexperience as a painter.I did resand one fender down with 320 and respray it,this time with the gun set up better and some more heat in the shop and it turned out much better.I color sanded that fender today with 1000 and 2000 wet dry and then polished it out with my dewalt buffer and some mothers product. The results were ok,but not as good as I hoped. This polyurethane enamel just doesn't seem to buff up very well and from what I read it should buff nicely. It could be just the crap mothers 2 step polish.Thinking I should grab some 3m product in the city. Now of course I don't have enough paint to redo the entire car.So a few options, number 1 go get more of the polyurethane as they did color match it pretty well, sand down the car and respray it.Option two,try to find the original color, whiltshire maroon,in acrylic enamel. You think that would be easy enough but now I've tried 3 paint shops and the last one finally had a listing for my code 902 in pontiac for 1949.Problem is it comes back as not available in their system.I even phoned BASF Canada as recommended by the shop and they have no mixing information or color swatch to match it to.What is this the holy grail of colors, shheesh. If I could find a mixing recipe they could make it for me.Third option is a company called auto color library and they say they have or recognize my color in any of 5 different paints including base/clear.The biggest issue with them is shipping,it outrageous to Canada. The paint is system is around 280.00 complete depending on what type I want but they want over 200.00 to ship it to Canada.Just for comparision I checked to see what it would cost to ship it to my buddies place in Montana and have him bring it back on his next trip down, ups ground to Montana 31.00 WTH!?!Anyone out there got the magic mixing formula or a DuPont code, etc.I have the code for poly wine parma which is a chevy color for 49-54 but when I type it in to autocolors site it gives me a different paint type than when I type in whiltshire maroon. This leads me to believe they are not the same color.Any help.any ideas?I see more sanding in my future anyway, aarrgghh!!

Not a pro but have painted many cars in my backyard, along with gravel trucks, logging processors etc. Orange peal is from paint drying to fast, not alowing it to flow out smooth. Could also be your paint is too thick, comming out of gun in blobs instead of mist ( looks too thick to me from pics ). It's a fine line to get paint to spray with the right consistency without getting runs. Also, are you putting on a tack coat first? You let this coat get sticky ( 15 min ) then apply your heavy top coat, the tack coat bites to the topcoat helping stop runs. If sanding down to redo I use 600 wet/dry, warm water with dishsoap ( keeps sandpaper from plugging ). Mix a small amount of paint and spray a scrap piece of metal doing tack/topcoat, set your gun untill you get the pattern you want. Once the scrap piece turns out good, leave the gun setting and spray the car. Hope this helps a bit. Unless your happy with it, I would repaint the whole car. It's only your time and a bit of paint, but your the one thats going to be looking at it the most, so make yourself happy with it. Watch a couple of painting video's on youtube it helps alot. Great progress and keep pics comming

on my first try I had the air pressure too high, about 45lbs at the gun and had the paint flow too far in.On the fender I repainted I turned the regulator on the shop compressor down to 40 psi, that gave me 35psi at the gun and I had my paint flow wide open.It turned out much better for sure and I only had one small run.I used 3 wet coats with 10 minutes flash time between coats.I will take a pic tomorrow and post it.I color sanded today with 1500 and 2000 wet and then buffed but I think I will try some 3m system instead of the cdn tire mothers 2 stage.Auto color also sells a clearcoat for the polyurethane so that may be an option as well.

well a little progress.this is the resanded and resprayed fender. So after a trip to the local greggs store and 250.00 later I have all the foam buffing pads and 3m compounds to do the buffing properly,oh plus the 200.00 dewalt polisher from last week.Today it was off to the city for another 400.00 of paint and supplies and then back to the shop for some more sanding. Now if all the panels turn out like this on attempt two I'll be more than happy.
