I had a set of keys cut for my 88 Cherokee (GM column) at the local Home Hardware a couple of months ago. They look just like the keys from the late 60's.

I found a little used buildings supplies place in the Lower Mainland that had a key cutting machine buried in the corner. He had a bunch of octagonal and round key blanks. Tried to buy a few. NO WAY - that'd be illegal. Can't sell blank keys. Asked if he'd cut them for me? NOPE - too much work to get the machine out.

How do some people stay in business?

I have my original set - complete with the knock-out plugs, but they're getting a bit worn and it'd be nice to have replacements.

Just checked and they are not the right blanks, mine have "A" and "B" stamped on the key portion.

Found a set on Ebay last night. Correct alpha coding. Set of 4. 2 ignition and 2 trunk. Should be good for a while.

Expect to see them in 10-15 days.

As part of GM Historical's service in Oshawa, they'll provide the codes to the dealer so they can cut them correctly. I did that through a local dealer. I provided them with the cover letter Oshawa provided, proof of ownership, and the dealer contacted GM Historical for the codes.

The codes are most probably on your build sheet if you can find it under the back seat or under the dash etc.

I find cutting copies is a bit dicey as they never seem to work quite right, as they're copies of worn keys. When possible, I get new ones cut to code.

Thanks for the notes. The original key set is long gone so the codes on the build sheet would not help. Fortunately I have a set of keys that do work. I will just have to get my new key blanks cut with my fingers crossed.

We have a local locksmith in Oshawa who has done a few sets of keys with good results.

Time will tell

I've seen some door and trunk lock cylinders with the code stamped on them. That might help. The trunk cylinder is sure easy to remove to check it.

A good locksmith might be able to figure out the code if the lock was off the car and in his/her hand. And then cut from there.
