Order up a late 70's impala alternator...then search the net for the re wire....ive cheated and jumpered the switch leg at the external reg. you will also need the correct new style alt. connector.
Ill try an post up the wiring, sometimes hard with the ipad....
Done this upgrade many times..
you can also check the regulator out, remove the cover and push the contact points closed...see if the alt. starts charging. The regs are setable, and sometimes cleaning up the points is all that is required.

Rog, his Strato will have an ammeter. Will that work?
That will be fine... My '67's and '66 Laurentian wagon and 4-Chief are done like this... I jumped the "blue" and "brown 12v" at the regulator and all is fine... The ammeter takes the difference from the junction stud at the battery and from the horn relay stud...

Thanks, good to know in case I ever need to do it.
Those old Delcos are just about bullet proof.

a real quick trick to see if it is charging once you've done the retro.. when the car us running... take a steel wrench or screwdriver, and touch it to the back center of the alternator.. when charging.. a magnetic fieldis created!
simple as that !

OR, since your sat down in the car anyways, look at your AMP gauge in the dash! (if it works)
