Looking for experience/ info Re: EFI Conversion


Hi All

I would like feedback from anyone who has, or knows someone, who has installed

EFI..............., Fast EZ EFI, Holley Terminator, Dominator, or MSD Atomic. Is the expense worth it

for drivability, reliability, efficiency etc? I'm looking for, set it... forget it ,

I am considering EFI on a 454 for my Beaumont build, I like the fact that it can also control

timing with Dual Sync Distrib. I'm new to this so it would also be helpful to have the ignition control

aspect of an EFI system explained. How does the ECM manage the fuel delivery and the spark.

Is it similar to cam timing of reluctor on modern LS engines.

 

I like the fact that the controller display gives a lot of info as to what's going on with engine and system

like A/F,  coolant temps, air temp in real time etc. More info than gauges.

 

I have a Qjet carb on another car and it seems to need continual attention and has a stumble, 

flat spot that seems to be a rich issue, smell gas with hard  acceleration and WOT,  haven't sorted it out yet,

any hints as to that issue would be  of value as well. Seems switch to EFI eliminates carb issues.

BTW, I understand a 65 GTO  owner in Wpg. has just gone from tri power to MSD EFI on new 400 build, if 

this car is part of CP, maybe that owner could help me out.

Kinda looks like a great idea, if you have unlimited funds....  

Most of us old school like a good working Q-jet  or Holley    

the price of the EFI would buy me a nice new engine or at least a carb

EFI is nice  but  2500-4000 plus the cost of the re-built 454 is pricy  (my 2 cents)

 I have an expectation of around $2500 all in with the MSD or Fast System including intank fuel pump and return lines. Spoke with a guy

tonite who raved about better MPG but didn't elaborate on cost. I guess since I've had nothing but headaches with present Edelbrock carb on my Beaumont and

tuning issues ( may have this rectified next week) with a Qjet on a Camaro, I guess  I'm looking for the simplicity and reliability of  EFI, plus it self learns and adjusts

to conditions somewhat like modern EFI systems. I'm certainly not Rockefeller but I will eat expense for reliable performance.   I guess this may bother a Hot Rod guru who has

been at this forever but I am new to this and  willing to learn and work at it, however, I'd rather spend more time driving than fixing.

 

BTW, Carl, your other brother Carl gave me such a good deal on the 454  BBC, I have $$$$$$$$ leftover in budget for EFI....Ha Ha.

I'm just thinking out loud here but what about swapping in a good LS motor? I think GM sells complete plug and play computers/harness for such a conversion. A truck 5.3 is pretty stout and are cheap in the boneyards.
I really want something old with an LS motor in it. Maybe I can live vicariously through you.

 That was my original intent..... Used LS2 400 HP  from 2005-6 GTO with trans in Us for around $6000. Was basically talked out of it " Just wouldn't look right in Beaumont ",

sort of agreed to  this logic. There are plusses for LS conversion and cons, from a reliability and modern aspect, that fits. I'm now committed to

Gen IV 454 .30 over and a good solid build........ hopefully when it's complete and  installed and I am pleased with  results I'll gush over it on this forum with pics.

Will be taking a lot of pics for proof of value for insurance purposes and appraisal of car anyway. Have madie most of decisions how to approach this engine. i guess it's apparent

I'm just trying to get positive feedback for EFI, I'm 80% convinced it's the way to go.

BTW. spent winter in Arizona, at the Goodguys Scottsdale show  it seemed every second classic car had a LS or huge Mast Motorsports LSX type conversion, not to mention all

turbo added conversions as well. Anyway thanks for the response.

I put the atomic efi in my 67 Beaumont last summer motor is 454 haven't driven it that much but so far seems great starts better runs cleaner couldn't run in garage before with the 800 cfm holley I can't really answer any questions you have but if you want answers call extreme performance in Winnipeg and talk to Keith the owner they supplied and installed mine. regards marshall in picture you can see the control box on firewall
