Ok just redid the whole front end on my '61. Took it to the frame, A-arms off, poly bushings, new everything, including brakes from the Power booster to the wheels on the front.
BUT
There is about a 1/4 turn in the steering wheel for "play"? Upon inspection, the "ram assembly" in the front seem to have about a 1/16 inch movement where there is a nut/cotter pin assembly on the top! So when you move the steering wheel, this nut/cotter pin deal moves THEN it moves the ram/steering?
So is this BAD or over spec? I know these old cars didn't handle like a Ferrari, just want to make sure it can last the summer till I pull the motor and then maybe upgrade the steering like Gregory did on his '61.
.....nothing should be loose, my 58 steers great with this setup. Are you talking the nut at the end of the shaft ? Take out the cotter pin and see if you can tighten the nut, or maybe the rubbers are worn and just can't tighten the nut anymore.
I have several 64's with the original ram style power steering and some play in the wheel is just the "nature of the beast"....personally,I LIKE it......gives the car more character and make it fun to drive.....DIFFERENT than NEW car steering...isn't that why we drive these old cars?
Sounds like your talking about the pitman arm into the pro portioning valve.. There will be slight play, as this shuttles and pushes the pilot that activates the 'power' steering.
