Thought it was about time to post pics of the new ride. As you know I sold, well traded big blue for this 84 Grand National. She's in pretty good shape, but starting to show her age just a little bit. Like most Turbo Buicks she had a few leaks. The old joke goes, "If your Turbo Buick isn't leaking oil, you better check it!" So far we have replaced the rear main seal, changed the rear diff oil and put a drain plug in the diff cover, flushed the tranny and put a new pan gasket and filter in as well as drain plug (yup that's right 200-4R's don't have a drain plug). A word of advice to anyone thinking about using a 200-4R in your project. Let a tranny shop do the flush and demand they use a cork gasket. These things are VERY touchy when it comes to a positive pan seal and it is VERY easy to over torque the pan bolts. I did a ton of research which saw the specs anywhere between 100-120 inch-lbs. And it leaked badly after we finished ... the tranny shop I ended up taking it to said I over torqued the bolts.. and I never went past 110 inch-lbs...
Next on the list is putting a new gasket on the oil return line on the back of the turbo. Should be a fun project.. NOT!
Over the winter I have a pretty long list of things I want to either upgrade or repair..well, mostly upgrade. I have been the benefactor of some pretty wild stereo equipment so when I pull the front seats to re-upholster them I'll be installing a pretty wild audio setup. The Lear-Siegler front seats are starting to show their age so I'll be tapping our sponsor NOS Reproductions for their replacement recovering set.
The suspension is getting a bit tired, so it will get all new, probably from Hotchkis, with the possibility of a GNX Four Link for the rear from Kirban Performance.
As for the car itself, no real surprises option wise, other than it is one of the few GN's that didn't get the limited slip diff. although having the digital dash, I'm surprised that there is no power windows or locks. Considering they only made 2000 GN's in '84 and of that only 100 were T-top cars.. it's pretty cool to finally own a car I've wanted since I was a teenager!
So meet Black Betty..
