anyone running a 8 volt battery in their 6 volt system?I had a discussion with a fellow and he happen to mention you could run an 8 volt battery in your 6 volt system and get a bit more juice out of it while not having to switch to 12 volts,Checked at ny local parts place and he can indee get me an 8 volt battery for my car.Generator puts out 8.4 volts so would charge the 8 volt battery no problem.Curious if anyone has tried this.
.....Yes I tried one in my 1950 one ton Chev truck. They do spin a little faster than the 6 volt, charging was not a problem. I bought a Willard battery. Problem is that it lasted just over a year. Not a truck I used much so that didn't help, but no warranty over a year and I never bought another one. Switched to 12 volt and it is much better. But I know a few guys in the old antique car club who use the 8 volt and liked it for those hard to start slow cranking engines.
On a negative note, the 8 volts battery require to reajust the voltage regulator. If you don't reajust the voltage regulator, the 8 volts battery will down to what the generator is ajusted for, around 6.5-7 volts and sulfatation will occur in the battery. If the voltage regulator is ajusted accordingly for the 8 volts battery, you put at risk all the bulbs, radio, breaker point/coil, gas indicator, and other electrical accesories you get in the car. To me it's worth the time and money to find the trouble why it's start too slowly on 6 volts. Not all 6 volts car are hard to start.
