Started my 489 stroker build today...


My first BB purchase, yep, I got me some valve covers for a song today! The plan is to focus the build around the covers lol! Going for a subdued stealth look.

One little spot of oil when I stuck my finger in the PVC grommet. Should have worn gloves. I'll plan better next time!

Actually, I'm not even sure they'll work. Big roller rockers won't fit, only Comp Pro-Magnums with a short Poly lock, and using a big gasket instead of a O-Ring might work.

Doesn't matter...I've bought my first BB part. The Carls will be happy.

Yeah..I think you have to mow uot the inner rail for the o ring to use them....

Mark, Mark, Mark (OMG is that a dog with a harelip?!?!)(Geez I cannot believe I just did that) ...

Those valve covers are for the Mark (I will refrain from another harelip dog joke) V BBC, and they're only for 502+ not 489/496 Mark IV BBC, so they will not fit, eh?

But not to worry, I have a couple of sets of marvelous original Cal Custom BBC valve covers, so when you are REALLY ready to bolt together a nasty rat motor, just let me know.

But I have to admit, those black finned VC's that GM did (now out of production, so hang on to them!) are dead-drop gorgeous, I wanted them for my BBC until I found out they were not compatible ...

You know Dave, I really do appreciate the vintage look, and those Cal customs are to die for. But the truth is I really don't think they's suit my car, although I think any BBC valve cover 66-92? will interchange? No?

It's too new. Really, my 67 is too new for those. The way I see it, they belong on nothing newer than a 64 rod or drag car. Maybe a 65. 

The plan is in flux, and I change my mind often, but I'm really looking to add just a touch of modern to the look of my 496. And the hope is those crinkle black valve covers will clear the rockers. There is something about them that reflects the past, yet looks new at the same time..

 

I'm glad to have a look at those CC covers though, they are the real deal! Thanks for posting em'. When I do a Gasser 67, I'll call you!

Well I do not know from personal experience, but Classic Industries says These cast aluminum valve covers are for use with the Mark V 454 7.4 liter and Mark V 502 8.2 Big Block engines. They can be used on Mark IV engines by machining off the raised O ring splash shield on the exhaust side of the cover and removing the bosses under the rocker cover hold down bolts."

Mark IV are the motors first built in 1965, and Mark V are recent production.

So if you buy a new crate motor (which no longer come with your black VC's, although they used to) then you are good to go.

But if you rebuild an old 454, then the heads are slightly different and the machining mentioned would be necessary, I believe.

When I had my all-black mock motor (the polyurethane foam long block was black, and the plain factory valve covers I used were black) test-fitted in my 56, I have to admit the all-black motif was ... well, stealthy for sure, and quite likely even sexy wink ... so I would humbly suggest that if you want to follow through on the stealthy look, you sand and paint the top of that oil filler cap black, and paint the whole motor black (including intake manifold, even if you change to an aluminum manifold) ... ooh that will be WAY stealthy!

(I like shiny so my aluminum heads and aluminum intake manifold and aluminum water pump and of course those gorgeous CC VC's will 'shine on' biggrin eh?)
