Fargo Television Series - Producers Looking for Cars to use in next season in Calgary - 1962-1979

Fargo seeks non-classic clunkers for season 2 shoots

The cast and crew prepare for the next scene on the set of the new "Fargo" TV series in Calgary, Alberta, March 11, 2014. A particularly punishing winter, even by Canadian standards, has served well the new cable television series "Fargo," a reimagining of the blood-soaked black comedy film of the same name by brothers Joel and Ethan Coen. The 10-episode single-season series, which debuts on April 15 on Twenty-First Century Fox Inc's cable network, is a new story with different characters, but leans heavily on the frigid Minnesota setting, death, Midwestern folksiness and deadpan humor of its Oscar-winning namesake. That old clunker in the driveway could be worth more than you think and become famous.

Producers of the fan-favourite FX series Fargo are looking for vehicles made between 1962 and 1979 to be used during production of season 2, which began Monday and runs until about May.

Were looking for non-iconic, non-muscle kind of cars, said vehicle coordinator Glenn Hughes.

I like the everyday mans car, like the Ford Granadas, not so much the Cadillac land cruisers.

Owners will be paid $175 a day for the use of their vehicle and if youre chosen to drive it in a scene, youll get paid on top of that.

Why I choose owner-operators is because theyre usually the best people to operate their cars, said Hughes.

These are all going to be drive-by, background cars, stuff like that.

Vehicles used will be stored and fully insured by the production.

To apply, email Hughes at fargopicturecars@gmail.com with a photo of the vehicle.

a rare time, that 4drs and station wagons will be the stars of the show, (well the background star anyway)

True.

It would be a truly realistic street scene in North Dakota (filmed in Alberta) with cars that are not Barrett-Jackson types.

With it's close proximity to Manitoba, I wonder how many Canuck Pontiacs made their way down to Fargo in the day?

Sent a picture of my 63....waiting on an answer, for $175+ $$ for my time each day, it's a worthwhile way to supplement my pension, and have some fun.

Hey Bob,they seem to want "regular" everyday cars from that period 1962-1979.

"We're looking for non-iconic, non-muscle kind of cars, said vehicle coordinator Glenn Hughes"

Send a picture of the car you have in mind to use  to Glenn Hughes at  fargopicturecars@gmail.com

Hope mine isn't too "classic" or "iconic" .....haven't heard back yet. -Geo

I've encountered a couple of unique Canadian cars in the yards in that area over the years. Not much though.

Not to worry, I don't think anybody except guys like us would even notice the difference.

I've never seen the movie but from what I hear, they portray Fargo in a way that is nothing like the actual city. We've likely stayed there a few 100 times in our life and it's been all good, we enjoy it there, plus my favourite wrecking yard isn't far away from there!

Watch the movie Carl. It's a classic. Dry but dark mid-west humor (no "u"). I didn't get a negative vibe about Fargo from the movie. As I recall, the bad guys were from out of state...

I haven't seen the TV series so can't comment.

Both the movie and the series share the concept of how ordinary northern people deal with evil in their midst.

The original movie by the Coen Brothers really delights in the sound of the language of Minnesota and in showing off the kind of culture that results from that land, the climate and the people.  They make it look and sound a bit like poetry  and make me as a northern guy quite conscious that what we see and hear around us everyday is kind of unique. Throw into that mix some bad guys and what you get is kind of a Garrison Keillior (Prairie Home Companion) type of crime story.

What the series has done is to take that, add some elements from almost all of the Coen Brothers movies (most notably No Country For Old Men), and then play the story out for ten one hour shows.  Really good stuff especally the acting by Alison Tolman and Colin Hanks as  decent regular very ordinary cops, Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins from the Hobbit) as the weak bad guy and Billy Bob Thornton as the really bad bad guy. The series wound up the story line at the end so the second series is going to be a sort of prequel that is set in 1979.

They chose to shoot in Alberta (Drumheller and Calgary area) so that they could be pretty much assured that the winter scenes would look cold and last year they definitely got their wish.

This Year with the warm weather they may not get the look they want as easily but I think they'll love the exchange rate!

I hope all guys who submitted their stuff get to go. It will be fun.  I got to be in a low budget  NFB movie with my 1939 Buick back in 1988 and it was a blast.  I got to sit around in the bar in Mundare all day and drink beer and then do my shot right at sunset. I guess thats why I ran the stop sign in the shot I suppose. After all that they gave me a cheque for about $300.00. (and of course there is the fame....)

That's cool. My wife was a production assistant on a TV show filmed here in PEI last year. She has been invited back in May. This time it's 4 days on the Magdalon Islands all expenses paid. She had a blast and is looking forward to doing it again.
