wiring help please 64 cs

So I have been experiencing issues with with my  dash lights. Having to jiggle the switch to get them to work. So I cleaned up the switch. Was quite green. Worked awesome for about a day. Now blowing the fuse instantly. I put a new switch in. Same thing. I have two wiring diagrams and neither seem to match the wire colours I have brown wire and black wire with orange stripe look like they were warm at one point but not recently. I need my dash lights back. Help please. Everything else works.

Have you followed the 2 wires that look like they got warm? Are they possibly melted somewhere farther down the line and touching either another wire or a bare ground?

Yea they appear to be fine. And neither is related to the dash lights it seems. Looks to be for the dimmer switch. I could be wrong. I replaced the fuse for an 1156 bulb and the system works fine. So I put in a 10 amp fuse and it seems okay but why all of a sudden is it blowing the 5 amp that was in there with a new not green light switch

Is it possible the new switch uses the same connector but it's wrong for the application, i.e. wired different internally so when you plug it in, it creates a short?

Not all switches are wired the same, even though they use the same connector.

Is it brand new or just a different switch than the green one?

The new switch is brand new. It looks every bit the same as original. The fuse street blowing with a cleaned original switch.

Check the wiring going to the rear lighting. Mine shorted out behind the top part of the rear seat, the short was bad enough to take out most of my fuse box so that and all the wiring under the dash headlight switch, dimmer and wiper switch had to be replaced. My turn signal switch (tilt column) is still not right.

Something odd to look for when tail lights are concerned.   The 1157 bulbs have 2 filaments.  Sometimes on older bulbs the filaments get stretched, then touch each other.  Can really create havoc.

Not sure if I understand "replaced the fuse for an 1156 bulb".

Also, it'd be a good idea to verify what value the fuse should be.

So I was our looking again. Everything works except for the instrument lights unless I replace the 3 amp for the 10 amp. Tail lights and signals brakes all work fine fuses for them are all good. I am at a loss here

I think someone mentioned in one of their posts, try unhooking the power to the rear lights. You can do that right in the front, pretty much under where your left foot would be when you sit in the driver's seat.

Yep tried that too Carl. Somewhere I solved the problem it seems. I found a clock light with no bulb. Perhaps the center pin worked it's way out and touched ground? I also noticed that the contacts where the fuse clips into the fuse panel where a tad rusty and I cleaned them up. Works fine with a 3 amp now. Wierd

Is a 3 amp enough for dash lights and tail lights? I wouldn't have guessed it.

Good for you anyway, as long as it's working.

Aparently the dash lights are a separate fuse. According to the schematics this is also true. There is a separate 15 a for the tail lights

Again I learn something new.

So if you turn on your headlights and pull that 3 amp fuse, your dash lights go out but your tail lights stay on?

I would have lost money on that bet!

Yep this is true. I'll bet if you pull the tail lamp fuse they will also go.out as I think that 3 amp fuse is fed from the tail lights.
