have flowmaster series 40 on my 55 gmc. everybody says the old beast has a nice growl. originally i had a 283 but now its a 70 350 but same exhaust. i might have a video of it running

While you can't beat the superior quality of a Flowmaster. You might want to save a little money. So consider the Thrush Welded muffler.
It's said to be a Flowmaster 40 knockoff, is Aluminized and of very good quality. Available in a few different inlet sizes and offsets as well.
Now mind you, they are not exactly quiet, but they're far from annoying. Around town they're just fine, but they really bark when you get on em', my 327 sounded totally retro on the pipe, and I bet your 283 would as well.
I've had them on my 2.5" full length system 4 years running, and they show no signs of rust or failing at all.
Any decent muffler shop could probably get them, even carquest I bet.
everybody loves the flowmaster exhaust on my 64 chevelle 4dr beater.....but on
the highway the droning (sp?) is a little annoying....I love it never-the-less
Let me expand a bit. There are certainly a lot of variations to exhaust tone, as well as recording device mic quality. Flowmaster does have it's own sound even within those variations, the final result is very dependent on tube size, headers or manifolds, balance pipe or true separate pipes, muffler placement in the system, tailpipe length, whether or not cats are used etc etc.
To my ear those Thrush 'knock offs' sounded more like glass packs. What my ears don't like may be pure sex to someone else...it's all good and that's why there are so many exhaust sample clips on youtube.
Summit racing does have Flowmaster copies, they call em Welded chambered racing mufflers. I put a pair on my 6.2 diesel pick-up, which didn't make it any faster, but did give it a really cool exhaust note. The Summit Mufflers have the same pattern of chamber baffle weld marks on them. No idea who actually builds them for Summit, but they are another less spendy option if you like the Flowmaster sound.
Seems I'm the odd duck again! Had flowmasters but didn't like the drone in the car so I changed to magnaflows. Seems to have a little more bark with no interior drone.
20 years ago Flowmasters were the hot ticket.....The sound IS cool and quite addictive.....BUT...after you've driven the car for 20 minutes....you'll get a headache from the noise.....
If you like to talk while you drive your car....OR listen to the radio......Just put on stock factory type duals....with Walker Dynamax turbo's....You will be GLAD you did........NICE clean "retro sound".....
Personally...I think Flowmasters will sound SILLY on a 283 unless you've got a really BIG cam (and gears) in it......Totally OVERKILL....and you might even LOOSE HP.....at the bottom end.....where you really need it....

I had Dynamax turbos on the Strato Chief toooooo quiet actually almost as quit as my truck
Installed Flowmaster 40's and that was awesome....
When I'm driving I NEVER NEVER have the radio on and drive by myself, so no need to talk
My 66 396 is getting Flowmaster 10's on it as soon as snow goes yes snow

Putting 3" exhaust on anything LESS than a 500 inch stove in a race car that spends A LOT of time OVER 6000 RPM.... it's an EGO trip .....AND a total WASTE....of TIME and $$$.....it's been proven.....
Your car will suffer...performance wise (read slow down).....until you get rid of the "small big block"....
Save your money for a radio....and some 19 1/2" wheels....they are more of a "visible" ego trip...

My car is a Big Block I shift it at 6500 rpm and I have a new Milwaukee job site radio to throw in the back set, and I'm getting 20 inch rims tomorrow.... What do you think about air ride Its look cool to drop it on the ground after entering a car show with noisy mufflers and tunes cranked up ....
So what does your "small" big block do in the quarter....... @ 6500 RPM?
I do agree that there are many choices when it comes to exhaust. I put a set of 2 1/2 Magnaflows on my '64 CS with a 396 stroker, headers and 500hp. The original sound was just plain harsh, much like the open headers only the sound was coming from the back. I ended up putting in resonators and now love the sound. Since my CS is a 4 speed, I like to hear the sound of the shifts (so can others.) It has a good bark but not the drone on longer trips. (I can even hear the stereo when I am driving.) It is pretty darn hard to make a choice based upon You Tube videos played over computer speakers. Pardon my pun, but one can "exhaust" the possibilities . . . it still comes down to personal preference.

last year it ran 12:80 on all season radials I run it out the back at 7200 RPM This year I may run it full throttle
That's impressive........if you had big motor....you could prolly get in to the LOW-12's.......
I'd spend my $$$ on THAT instead of an overkill exhaust system......
A 2 1/2 mandrel bent Flowmaster street exhaust WILL get you into low 12's..through factory cast iron exhaust manifolds......if the rest of your car is that fast.....just sayin'......
