This is a beautiful car and one that inspired John Delorean when he fathered the 69 Grand Prix. Notice the long hood and short rear end and Model J and SJ designations.
There used to be some great American marques, like Auburn, Peirce-Arrow (from Buffalo). Those coffin-nose Cords were sort of the inspiration of the Olds Toronado.
When you think about it, GM was in an unassailable position in the market. With all that critical mass, 5 car divisions (more if you consider the specialty Canadian hybrids ) It gave GM the ability to shuffle various stuff to different divisions. I mean the 1966 E-bodies were the Toronado & Riviera. One was FWD and the other RWD. Meanwhile running high-speed cameras at Camaro leaf springs lead to the implementing of staggered shocks. I guess mass production and market share could fund a lot of development.
