All I see is the switch beside the radio. Is it the front/rear loudspeaker selection?

That would be my guess.....looks to be a dealer installed item.

Thanks for the enlargements,Carl......knew I could count on you for that.....

The switch beside radio IS front/rear fader for radio speakers.....

My take is that it was an assembly line option,...NOT dealer install......but will investigate further ....and report....

Didn't notice the buggered fuel gauge........DAVE....I want my $$$ back!  biggrin

KEEP guessing............

I contacted Dave quite a while ago re: that speaker knob. My convertible has a rear speaker yet does not have that switch. The interesting thing about it is that the panel is designed from the factory for that switch i.e. it is detented like the radio knobs. It could not be a dealer installed item. This has always intrigued me. Why do some have it yet others don't?

So where is your rear speaker switch/control Jim? Is it behind the tuner knob on the radio like later years?

John Clawsie's 61 appears to have the same speaker switch.....wonder if it was a "carry over" deal into 62....till the dashes with the switch holes in them got used up?

My speaker switch was mounted under the dash left of the steering column. It looked like some sort of aftermarket switch and didn't belong at all. In tracking down one of the original owners who had the car for 30 years, all he could remember is that the rear speaker never worked. Last winter I found the wire going to the rear speaker was disconnected at the speaker. My original radio doesn't work and I have a modern stereo in it anyway. Its interesting what transpired back then. Because of that one switch, Gm manufactured 2 different dashboards. I thought that maybe my instrument panel was replaced at one time. I learned that the car suffered a short in its past and quite a bit of wiring had to be replaced but when I had it out last winter I found a factory label on the back of the instrument cluster with the vin that corresponds to a convertible. Its all confusing. Maybe somebody has some idea?

Update.............

Gas gauge needle was NOT missing.....just WAY below empty.....Dave....you never told me there was no gas in the tank....confuse

Snapped a few pics of the rear speaker switch....looks like a factory install to me....plan to do some surgery on it tomorrow....and we'll see then what the hole looks like..

OK,back to topic.

I noticed that this dash insert is pretty much symetrical......and COULD go both ways.....for RHD cars.

We DO know that RHD 64 CDN Pontiacs were sold NEW in the UK and Austrailia...

Was this happening in 62?.....don't recall seeing another one (any year) with this capability.

I think the RHD Pontiacs all had a Chevy dash though didn't they?

Here's one I bought to replace my butchered and badly pitted one.   I have better pics elsewhere, this one is from the advert.   It was from a RHD Impala moredoor hardtop.   All RHD Pontiacs and full size Chevrolets 61-64 had the same dash.   The radio delete that came with this one did not have raised letters because they only made Pontiac ones in that style.

COOL!

Now that's GOOD information........can you post some more pics....?....and are there any part #'s /date codes on the back...

As I understand it....there were NO RHD converts or 2 doors (hardtop OR sedans) built ........just 4dr.hardtops,.....4dr. sedans and wagons.....

Mines a convertible RHD.   54 were made exclusively for the UK.   Around 10 are believed to exist today.

You should find pics of the dash I bought here:

Very COOL....thanks for the link......I'm guessing that's actually a 61 dash....as it is ribbed in the center....not grained....like mine is...

Two points: a) The car was on empty, that's why they sold it to me for a parts car.

b) The convert I just sold had the same radio speaker switch.

Now, to start a new thread in the interior section so I can identify my new bucket seats.
