I have a new fuel gauge in my the tank of my '63. It was registering at 3/4 of a tank of gas. I put gas in and it did not change after I drove it about 30 miles. I added another $50. the gauge went to full and after driving around, some highway speeds for about 70 miles the gauge has dropped down some. IS IT a ground or float problem?
Confused here, says it read 3/4 when you installed it, then you added fuel?? so was it reading 3/4 when no fuel in the tank. Sounds like the float stuck when installing it, then after adding the $50 on top of what you put in the gas freed it up. When I had my 64 Catalina, you could drive a long way before the needle came off full, then a free fall below 1/2 to a 1/4. Carl is right if bad or no ground they go OVER full but wouldn't hurt to check both connections. Lets hope the arm didn't bend on getting jambed somewhere

Before you take it all apart, use a jumper wire and ground out the sender wire at the tank. Gauge should go empty. If it does, ground the tank and check. If there's a ground issue, the gauge should change some (depending on amount in tank). If that's ok then you'll have to remove the sender and check it. Moving the float through the range and checking the gauge. If that's ok, then the float rod is bent wrong or hitting something in the tank. Either could stop the float reaching empty. Good luck.

Ha Carl , thanks for the help. I am hoping it is as simple as a ground prob. John did me proud "overhauling" my Chief, he is not likely to warranty the work--so I am afraid I cannot bring it back to SNOTOBA! I am in the desert for the duration. Can't say I don't miss our incredible cruise nights.
