Here's a short story. Both our girls learnt to drive on whatever was in the driveway. Usually a full size car and a pickup/van.
The youngest actually took the practical test for her "big" license with an extended cab pickup. Examiner's comment was " most people don't show up with one of these "

Anyways when the oldest graduated with her BA and MA it was time for her first new car. She ordered a 2001 Toyota Celica GT with a standard transmission. " It's not really a sportscar if it doesn't have a standard transmission " was her reasoning. Present car Volkswagen Tourareg.

Youngest graduates with BSc and MA and orders a 2006 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a standard shifter. Same reasoning. Present car - Jaguar XF.

Dad did manage to take the sportscars for a few spins.

I pulled all the big block floor shifts out and installed in line 6s with power glides, column shifts. Very hard to find this stuff, most people through out these parts

Todd, if you need it, I can get one of my daughters to give you some 3 pedal lessons, or my wife.

Were talking real cars here Todd, no Fords here now. Although the 17 year old daughter did enjoy a 5 speed SHO and V6 5 speed Mystique.

Sorry, all automatics here also. I have owned several manuals over the years but not currently. Even my 49 Pontiac is a hydramatic! The one I liked the most was my 1989 GMC 1/2 ton with a 6.2 diesel and a five speed manual. Not peppy but almost 30 mpg.

Wife dont drive so Im the official chauffeur of the family.

2019 Sierra Elevation Auto
2009 Fleetwood Bounder 35e. Auto
2006 HD Streetbob Obviously standard
1965 Acadian Beaumont Custom. Auto

Id prefer the Acadian to be a standard but I wont change it from original.
But auto has less parts that can break.

I wouldnt agree that the manual has more parts that can break, in about 1.5 million kms of driving manuals, I had 1 bearing failure at about 200,000 kms on one car I owned. And they are fixable, unlike the new automatics, many of those are not repairable by a dealer.

Find myself migrating away from manuals as I get older. Even wrangled a Taurus SHO 5-speed as my first company car, back in the day. Now, putting my '62 Impala SS coupe up for sale, the last three-pedal car in a "fleet" that used to be composed of more stick shifts than slushboxes. More recent departures included a '65 Corvette restomod with a 6-speed, '65 Corvette roadster with an M20, '65 Mustang GT vert with a toploader.

Also seeking a/c, p/s, pdb, and other modern driving accessories, where I prized originality for so long.

In other news, got the Beaumont running, again - defective in-tank Holley fuel pump. The replacement they sent me is actually for a 600 hp application; the one I bought was for 450 hp, which is all this mild BBC needed. Next up - Dakota Digital cruise module. Was thinking about taking her down to the Crusin the Coast event, along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the first week of October, but probably will put that off for a year... ;)

wow - this thread was dead for roughly six years!

I wouldn't have any automatics, if not for buying the only "cool" truck my grandfather ever had;

1970 Pontiac Firebird = 3 pedals
1991 Pontiac Grand Am = 3 pedals
1992 Chevrolet K1500 = 2 pedals
2008 Dodge Caliber = 3 pedals
2009 Chevrolet Cobalt (coupe) = 3 pedals
2009 Chevrolet Cobalt (sedan) = 3 pedals

That works out to roughly 83% manual transmission.
