2001 GTP 32,000km's --- opinion of value?

Sorry, this car is not for sale online but it's likely going to be for sale privately within our family. My sister in law has it, she's the original owner. I told her I would help her set a price for it. Likely it will just sell within the family but she has about 10 nephews and nieces who want it, so it's not impossible that I may advertise it for her.

-Bought new at our dealership, I pretty much know the whole history of the car.

-Bright red 4 door, sunroof, leather, pretty much every option.

- 32,000 actual km's, always garaged, driven every week or two, so it's never sat for a long period of time. It never sits long enough for the battery to go dead. As a matter of fact, I finally told her she needed to change out the original battery in 2013, even though it was still working fine! (She was disabled in a car accident in the mid 90's, thus very little use of the car other than a few trips of about a 100 miles every few months, a few local trips from time to time as well)

-Completely original except battery and of course oil changes.

-Left front fender was repaired and repainted when someone clipped her when she was making a left turn. Perfect repair, no indication of it ever having been damaged.

-The car is NICE!

So the question is, if she sells this car, what is fair market value for it? When I search Kijiji Canada and ebay, I find lots of them for $3000-$5000 but I don't think that's realistic in this case because those cars all have 160,000km or more on them. If anyone has any experience with sales of a similar car, please share it with me.

I told my wife if it's going for under $8,000 then I'm buying it and our G8 will be come a summer and nice weather car.

However, I have to outbid a lot of my nephews!

I've been doing a bunch of searching online since I made the original post. Being a GTP I have to think it will bring $8,000 plus just because someone is buying pretty much a brand new car. We get year old trade ins with more miles than this!

And not that it's necessarily a good thing but this car still runs on the original tires!

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix, 146,700 miles:
- Fair Purchase Price = $3,629 US
- Suggested Retail = $4,679 US = $5,848 Canadian
Add 15% premium (my estimate) for extra low Km (32,000) = $6,726 tops.

Carl, I see your conundrum here, looking on line for cars for sale yields a plethora of Grand Prix's but they all seem to be rather used up in excess of 200,000 km, I even saw one here in Toronto with 387,000 km. These kind of kilometers speak well to the car's reliability but the prices are so low, $500 to $3,000,  it makes it hard to find a comparison. This also makes it hard to ask a price that is inordinately greater than what the going rate is for these cars. Perception is reality and I can't see the car selling on the open Market for $8,000 or even $6,500.  I'd say the best thing to do in this case with so many family members involved is to get a quick appraisal, someone at your dealership who knows the car. I think that for you assigning a value and being a potential buyer is a formula for disaster.

Since you are screwed into a provincial insurance I would approach the local insurance office and ask what they value the car if totaled. Most likely get a deaf mute response but worth a try. Bugger is that it's not considered a collector car and has the low mileage but no warranty. It really falls down to who is the highest bidder in the family.

Excellent points you make Ray.

Best part of all this is, I'm not worried about it being a disaster because I have been her "go to" guy for car advice since I married her sister over 25 years ago! I know I've built up considerable brownie points and likely have my foot in the door better than any of the others! I'm just not absolutely certain I want the car. A year ago I would have, but now with the G8 that desire has really waned.

Good idea, I hadn't thought of doing that.

The other option that occurred to me is my boss. He does consignments for a $500 fee usually. Included in that he details the car and does all the advertising, paperwork, phone calls etc.
