Ok, does 1/2" UNF sound familiar? 1/2" x 20 threads per inch?

Yup, parts book says exactly that, 1/2" X 20 threads per inch.

Boy, we sure didn't jump to help when you first asked 3 days ago, did we....

It confused me that you asked about "steering wheel nuts", and I thought you were asking about the drivers on Prince Edward island.blankstare

Ok, got the threadnut and fixed the thread, now hunting around for parts to finish assembly. The steering columns i used to make one had parts missing. Just can't remember what thrust washers are used and in what order. Tried searching for an exploded view but no luck! So, any assistance is greatly appreciated! What is missing here, apart from the steering wheel that is..... This is a floor shift standard 65 impala column. The indicator assembly is new. You can see the upper bearing in the blinker assembly, the preload spring and wheel nut, there should be a washer or two in there somewhere, maybe a clip? Thank you kindly sirs! image.jpg

I have the 66 Pontiac manual showing the steering column but it is for a tilt. I scanned it but for some reason it would not attach. Anyway it does show a washer before the nut. Hope that this will help you.

thanks mate! There is a washer under the nut when the wheel goes on but just need to be sure no other bits between the ring and upper bearing and on top of the spring. No hold in clips and such Or is the spring compressed by the steering wheel.?

Hey Phil,

Have you been able to find replacement steering column bearings at all? I have a 68 Australian delivered Parisienne that I am restoring. Having trouble finding the two bearings.
Originally the car came with the column auto but now I'm changing this to a floor shifter. Do you know if the 68 Parisienne steering column is the same as the US 65 Chevy Impala ones? (For Australian delivered Pontiacs )

Cheers,

Steve.

Hey steve, the 68 is a little different from the 65. 68 is collapsible, different mountings etc. Aussie ponti and impala are the same. I have a bearing sitting on my bench. I got a floorshift column from a mate of mine, was able to salvage bearings. Also used a LHD column shift indicator window delete panel. Darn thing was slightly different  with angles relating to the column but i was happy ith the outcome. If you contact Dale at NOS who is a site sponsor, he can help. I bit the bullet and bought a new indicator assembly complete from dale . From memory $75 canadian with aussie $ around parity with CA$ was a no brainer. Included bearing, wiring and assemble complete! Depending on shipping options it took a good 2 months to get to me as it went by boat i think.

Always good to maximise shipping costs by buying more parts

I have adapted a hq- hz steering column previously and works. A treat. Takes a bit of work though. If fitting the 68 column You might need to fit the 68 dash as the column is thicker and the bottom cover, which screws to the dash is wider, mounting hardware  and  brackets are different.

Regards,,phill
