New border rule

This time a good one. If you cross the border to pick up your purchase there will be no tax charged on shipping costs. That said most Ebay items are  shipping included now

In my experience that has always been the case. Onus is on you to produce an itemized receipt which will state value of merchandise exclusive of shipping.

More important with the dollar at less than par, on my last crossing with an order from Summit (with no shipping charged by the way), I had my VISA bill with me indicating the cost in USD and the resulting amount charged in CAD. It didn't occur to me until after that the credit cards kind of rip you on exchange. The border agent did a quick calculation and charged me tax on an amount far less than I expected.

I've never been charged tax on the shipping amount, only the amount of the item.  Also re producing your visa bill showing US & Cdn values, the tax is charged on the amount the day you're importing the item, not when it was paid for.  Typically they'll take the US value, convert it to Cdn, then charge the appropriate tax on that amount.

Had an incident with a young custom person at the Toronto airport about just this topic. I had arranged to have a car part sent to our NY office, which I would be visiting. Cost of part $23 US plus $6 US to ship it from Ohio to NY. When I filled out my customs declaration I put $23 as my purchases. I had been in the US for 4 days so, at that time was allowed about $200 duty free. Going thru customs I was sent off to the side and questioned about the part which was in my checked luggage. I was escorted to the baggage carrousel and when my bag came up they made me open it and take the package out. The bill was in the package so I showed it to her. First question was if the bill says $29 why did you only claim $23? I pointed out that the part only cost $23 and that was what I was claiming? She snorted and walked away.

Also of note is that if you buy a part personally at a store in the US the store may charge you state sales taxes. You don't have to claim this as part of you exemption just the actual price.

We never have had to show receipts or add shipping    We tell them a total amount and drive on home    as long as it not over 1000  we are always good to go

I show them my receipt which has the purchase price circled, and that's what they go with.  The shipping is right there but is not pertinent.  This is the same thing as having something sent to you - tax is charged on the amount of the item, not including the shipping price.

I see that in some auction. That is a pure money grab. That has nothing to do with Revenue Canada etc is my guess. Strictly the seller charging extra.

I have so far avoided ebay auctions that have those fees.

I crossed the border at Buffalo last nite and was charged taxes on the shipping charges. I told them they changed that rule 3 or 4 years ago and Niagara falls does not charge. she said they always have charged and if Niagara falls is not charging they are wrong. how can two border crossings in the same province only 30 miles apart not know what the other is doingfurious

I've had the same issue, at the same crossing but with different people....

I don't want to get into arguments at the border. My name is clean there and I like to keep it that way.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to get different interpretations, by different officers, to the same law. Getting your name flagged in the system is not worth the argument over paying a few extra bucks when crossing. You'll pay more in the long run both in time and money.
