Heavily modified pontiac

Im sure many of you have come across this ad:

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/city-of-toronto/1962-pontiac-laurentian-canadian-2-door-post/1076452040?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true

What are your opinions? I guess the purists will be raising their noses in disgust, but I must admit besides the color I like this car.

Having seen this car in the flesh, it is a well done hot rod. Definitely different but not for everyone.

Since you're asking for opinions, I'll give mine.  Remember it is only an opinion, not fact, so don't beat up on me too badly.

Overall, I think it is well executed.  The top chop is very well done, right down to the door sashes.  I like the way that he laid back the windshield instead of lengthening the roof panel to maintain the original windshield angle.  IMHO it gives the car a sleeker, lower look.  Given that it is a 2 door sedan, that is a challenge.  There's a lot of work in that roof alone.

Compare it to a stock version and you can really see how he has changed the character of the car:

$_27.JPG  1962%20Pontiac%20Laurentian%202dr%20Sedan-01.jpg

Curiously, there aren't any pics of the rear of the car, so I don't know what was done there.

There are a few things that don't work for me, and one is the colour.  While it definitely has an impact on you when you first look at it, to my eyes it doesn't accentuate the work done on the car very well.  A darker colour would have accomplished that a little better IMHO.  Plus, that colour kind of dates the car, I think, reminds me of the '80s when pastels were in vogue.  Personally, I couldn't look at that colour every day (again, just opinion).

I like the '59 Chevy dash and the Olds wheel.  In my opinion, the console looks too flat and bland - it needs some kind of trim or accent lines built into it - again, just my opinion.  Also, for my tastes it brings too much mauve inside the car and combined with the black carpet and white seats makes it a little too busy colourwise for me.

My only other disappointment is that the engine room is a little bland given how the rest of the car is done.  Possibly he decided to cut corners there given how much time and money was spent on the rest of the car.  I can understand that.  It does have a BBC, so it's hard to find fault there.

Pretty cool car overall, and work done to the level that I could only dream of doing, so huge compliments to the builder for that.  Most of my criticisms come down to personal taste, so they are not really criticisms.  Just giving my opinion as asked by the OP.

The purist side of me says that it's OK, despite being a relatively rare car (compared to production of US Pontiacs, for example), as long as it wasn't done from a mint original.  But still as I've said before, even if it were, he owns it and not me so really none of my business.

Edit: After reading down the board a little I was reminded of one more opinion... for my money I'd rather have the car in this thread:  http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/t60010345/estate-sale-64-beaumont-sd-convertible-in-kelowna/

Agree 95% w/ MC. Only difference: not sure what else is desired in the engine compartment, all is nicely finished in semi-gloss black, understated valve covers and air cleaner - no random wires, no extra geegaws - looks good to me.

And, of course, I am far from a purist biggrin

Yeah, I agree with you.  My point was only that I was expecting to see something like this:

Rather than this:

That said, there's nothing with the Laurentian's engine bay - it's actually how I would prefer my cars to look - clean and all business.  But when I see a heavily customized exterior and interior I expect that to carry over to the engine room.

Mind you, the custom that I stole the top pic from (http://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/0601cr-1962-bonneville-custom/) is probably a $200,000 car vs a $30,000 car.  But that's why it is only opinions... smile

Ooooooooooh, that is GORGEOUS! Those smoothed inner fenderwells and firewall really add a lot (wish I had the money/skills to have them)

... as does the body-color-painted motor with plenty of chrome dazzle to top it off.

Maybe the lavender-car builder ran out of money after all that bodywork and the full custom interior? smile

I like the clean look as well on a custom.

And i agree, it probably came down to a budget/time issue, with so much done on the rest of the vehicle.  wink

Personal opinion; Like the car, the mods, engine etc, but the colour, not so much.

Have seen this car many times at the local cruise nites. As many on here say - each to his own. Not my " cup of tea ". I've never looked close enough to see how well it's done but from across the row it appears to have had much time spent on it. It does draw a crowd.
