Is the sunvisor fiberglass? What about the stainless steel trim mouldings does he supply or do you need to find used or nos. Really nice accessory for a tri five.

I am a major fan of exterior sun visors myself for this era of car. For that kind of money, it has to be fiberglass. For the novice here is some useful information. There are three different visors for 1955 1956 1957 Pontiac and Chevrolet. The (sedan) sun visor fits all sedans including 2 and 4 door sedans, wagons and sedan delivery's. The (hardtop) sun visor only fits 2 door hardtops and Nomads. Then there is the real RARE one, the( four door hardtop). The four door hardtop visor will only fit that model. Take my word for all  this as being gospel, because i have been there many many times. Visors at swap meets have now become very very  very rare. Fiberglass visors come up now and again and i would personally stay clear of them, i will explain why in PM's if anyone wants to know. I do realize that not every one appreciates these wonderful accessories but i have always loved them, not only  for that classic look but also for the practicality. These visors are now very rare and expensive and that is why they are making them in fiberglass. STAY CLEAR  OF FIBERGLASS........... unless you are really desperate. The last exterior sun visor i bought was for my 1957 Pontiac. I bought this visor in Carlisle, Penn., U.S.A. in 1996 for $500.00 U.S. and that was a really good price at that time. They do repro the mounting brackets and the small side stainless pieces. Cheers. George

Excellent information. I am certain the Pontiac sunvisor has the added stainless moulding at the rear / roof part of the visor and the chevs do not. Please correct me if I am wrong. There were a couple of visors at Zephyrhills this winter and the prices were $1000 and above for the 2 dr sedan visor with mouldings that neede work.

Al, you are right. I forgot to mention that the Pontiac had stainless  trim that  went all the way around and the Chevy was only at the front of the visor. I have never liked the Pontiac version of the trim and always thought the Chevy trim was  much cleaner and better looking. My 57 Pontiac has the Chevy version. Like i said in my previous post i paid $500 U.S. in 1996 for a sedan visor. I saw a four door hardtop visor about 15 years ago for $1200 U.S. and  in Hershey, Penn., U.S.A. i saw a two door hardtop visor for $900 U.S. I have an extra exterior sun visor stainless trim piece for sale if anyone needs it.Sunvisor trim 001.JPGCheers. George

Gord, i am sorry if i slagged your fiberglass sun visor. I hope you have luck with it but they do tend to crack and sometimes even tear off at highway speeds.

George I was thinking of this for my 52 Torpedo Back, but I was wondering "aboot' how much wind drag they create, either steel or F/glass, would they both hold up at 80 Mph or better!!!  certainly don't want to rip holes in the roof going down the interstate or take out another vehicles w/shield etc. I'm sure it makes the car much cooler inside, & going to take the 52 to W.V in sept.  Thks.  pete

Pete, i doubt they make fiberglass sun visors for your 52. Steel is the only way to go no matter what. On the main brackets that go on the roof, never use screws. Always use bolts, lock washers and nuts because they will never loosen off, unlike screws. Off course it means removing the head liner where the brackets will be but it is well worth the added effort. Wind is not an issue if properly fastened down because sun visors are designed to allow the passing of air between the visor and the roof area. Also it is important to use a sealer where the holes and brackets are because of obvious water sealing. I have had exterior sun visors on my 56 Chev 210 sedan, my 57 Chev Bel Air hardtop and now my 57 Pontiac Pathfinder Deluxe sedan and i have never had any kind of trouble what so ever. You just have to be smart about the initial installation. Good luck with your search for a visor for your 52. Cheers. George

Hey buddy you have a great 2-door wagon there, about additions/changes/upgrades, whatever makes you happy, fibreglas has been around since the 50's and has proven to be a durable material (the largest car manufacturer in the US continues to build their flagship performance car with it, eh?), and WAY more reasonable $$$, looking forward to seeing it when it is done.

Pete, i think you might have misunderstood me. You only have to peel back the first six inches or so just behind the windshield. Just enough to access the area where the bracket bolts would go. You are a hands on guy, if i can do it you can.

Since they are not "form-fitting", would it not be possible for Pete to "modify" another year Chev visor to fit, since one for Pete's car is a rarer beast. How far off are the roof lines?

They generally are form fitting, very much so. To try to modify a different visor would just be a butcher job and you would be crying for messing up your roof.
