Pre-War Pontiac

Thanks for adding me to your Group!! A few years ago I purchased a 1941 Pontiac Streamliner Torpedo, this spring I decided it might be a good idea to have the car appraised for my insurance company. The appraiser claims that after searching the VIN number that the car was assembled in Flint Michigan and entered Canada in 1984. The previous owner confirmed that the car was restored and brought to Canada in the mid-eighties. What we are trying to determine now is how many of these pre-war pontiac's actually exist in Canada. Hopefully one of the members can offer some insight. Thank You

I don't have any of your requested info but I do think that, that is one impressive looking car.

Thanks for the comments!! I expected it would take a while to research this but I'm sure someone out there will be able to point us in the right direction. I did find a 1941 coupe with an flathead 8 for sale in Ontario. The seller states that the car is not road worthy and requires full restoration. The search continues!!

Here's a '47 for sale on PEI: http://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/charlottetown-pei/1947-pontiac-torpedo/1058938143?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true# It's been modified.

DualQuadPete (on this website) has a hot-rodded '50's torpedo-back.

Beautiful car, probably one of the most pure renditions of the classic streamlined styling theme, IMHO.

Regarding how many exist in the country, I don't know how you would ever determine that, unless you had some kind of magic access to DMV files across the country.

I've seen it time and time again in ads, something like: "only 6 left"... which I usually get a good chuckle from as I had probably seen 10 of them online that very day...

With pre-war stuff, I think it will be even harder as they are not at the peak of their popularity anymore.  There are probably a lot of them squirreled away in garages and barns... some of them probably restored in the '60s and '70s, some old hot rod or custom projects.  Etc.

"For sale" ads are probably not a good measure either, as whether something is for sale or not is totally random.  I always figure that for every one for sale there are probably 100 or 1000 of them that people don't want to sell.  That of course is not an estimation method, as even a 1-of-1 can be for sale at some point.

Good luck on your quest.  And enjoy your car, it's a looker!

Thanks for the input MC, like most Car Guys, I'm blaming my wife for opening this can of worms!! She was the one that suggested we have the car appraised to try and determine what the darn this is actually worth. As you likely know an appraiser needs to verify the authenticity of the car to provide us with value that the insurance companies with accept. I've also seen the Ads that claim "one of kind", "Police Special", "very rare" etc. and we all know it must be true because we saw it on the internet!! At the end of the day the car runs great and fun to drive with its bias ply tires, it was restored in the US back in the mid-eighties before it came to Canada. One of the members posted a 1940 Pontiac back in 2012 and I've emailed him to see if he still has the car we'll see where that leads. Thanks Again for the input and I'll keep positing updates.

Cheers

When I looked at the pictures I was think that's a $20,000 car all day long so I did some research and found many comparable from as low as $9,500 (untouched and unrestrained with 46,000 mi) to $27,900 for a resto mod. The best comparable I found was a '41 Torpedo Sedan, restored to original at $19,500.

Interesting Ray, were the cars you researched all in Canada? If they were it would nice to know where you found them. As I understand the process part of the value is based on replacement in the event of a total loss. If we can't find one in Canada I'm assume we'ed have to look south to do the comparison. Strange how you see 1940 and 41 Fords listed for 30 to 50K and our old Pontiac's are only worth 25 or 27!! Thanks for the comments.

Hagerty shows higher than that (had to use 1946 as they didn't show 1941 as an option).

By Hagerty standards, most car are ""condition 3 or 4 "" ... Exept for trailer queen and such ..

Thanks Again for everyone's input I guess there is a lot more interest in these pre-war Pontiac's then I thought. I did run across a few nice ones in my search; A 1941 * cylinder car posted by Larry Sterling apparently was for sale on e-bay over a year ago. Beautiful restored car by the looks of the pictures, sure wish I knew what it sold for. Enjoy!!

Your car looks amazingly similar to the Cadillacs of that era. Did someone say 1941 Cadillac?
