454 INFO

Got a chance to get a 454 out of a 3 ton truck.Want to know what the difference is from a car motor. Is it just the intake or are the heads - valve size different.

You don't want it. That is a tall deck engine, 4 ring grooves on each piston. The intake from a car/pickup engine won't fit, heads are junk, etc.

It's good for the crank and rods, throw the rest away, sorry!

What year is the engine? 1976 was the last year for use in cars.

I knew the 427s were tall blocks but I did not know the 454s were.

I believe it was 79-82 only and it has to be in a 40 series or larger truck to be the tall deck.

But to be safe, you should always get the casting number off the driver's rear of an engine to assure it's what it's said to be.

A quick easy way is on a low deck block, where water pump bolts to block top edge is almost even with top of block, where as tall deck block is 1/2" or so above water pump.

Not the greatest pictures but you can see the difference
