Bought a Canadian built GM car ... TOO!

I was originally looking for a Pontiac. Always liked Ponchos ... and my dad was a Pontiac man. But this car is just too sweet a ride ... and the deal was just toooooo good ... I just couldn't pass it up! I will be getting it next weekend if all goes as planned.DSCF4436.JPGDSCF4437.JPGDSCF4438.JPGDSCF4439.JPGDSCF4440.JPGDSCF4441.JPGDSCF4442.JPGDSCF4443.JPGDSCF4444.JPGDSCF4445.JPGDSCF4446.JPG

Details to follow. I will be sticking around ... I like this place. The engine seems to be the original 303 Rocket V8!

It has a hand operated park brake lever on the leftmost side of the dash. Just like my 52 American Pontiac had. Is there supposed to be a park with the tranny? Doesn't seem to be. If I recall correctly ... there are 5 positions on the column shifter. From left to right

No "Park" on transmissions back then. As you noted, the hand operated lever (which engaged the rear wheel drum brakes via cable linkage) was used while transmission was in Neutral.

Loved the "S" (= "Super") gear selection on those old Oldsmobiles, a little extra punch for the Rocket V8 smile

Beautiful car!

Need pics of the motor!!

Dave

Surely I can't be the only one who knows how a Hydramatic engages park ??

Am I that old...

Thanks

O.K.

With a Hydramatic, the parking pawl is engaged with the shifter in reverse and the engine turned off.

Try both moving the shift lever to reverse with the engine not running and turn the engine off with the shift lever in reverse.

Both methods engage the parking pawl and you can sometimes hear it clicking into place.

Try it on a slight incline or rock the car back and forth to feel it engage.

As soon as the shift lever is moved from reverse or when the engine is running, the parking pawl will release.

Good Luck!!

Thanks
Randy

Lets remember that Hydramatic was offered only in Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs at first (Pontiac later) so how many guys on here were exposed to these prestige brands as young men. Last produced in 56. My uncle was a Cadillac man and I recall his 54 but how many other's had exposure to these brands and hydramatic?

Thanks for the info!

I am wondering if there were differences between American and Canadian Oldsmobile 98s ... or were they identical?

I don't understand your post Ray??

Are you suggesting I shouldn't have told him how to activate park??   I cant help my self.

Just tonight I showed a fellow how to activate park in his 1955 Pontiac. I've seen it several times at the Tues. evening gathering with a block of wood behind the tire but never met him. Tonight after I showed him how, he was like every other person I ever  showed, a big grin and thanking me profusely!!

He said the car was in his family for over 45 years and his grandfather gave specific instructions to always block the tire as these cars had no park, and might roll away. "Hydramatics have no park", is probably one of the most common automotive misconceptions.

Thanks

Randy

I'm not qualified to answer but in 4-3-2-1... cdnGMfan should know all the details!!!

Cam...

I hope you enjoy your new found park!! Spread the word.  Also, Hydramatics don't have a torque convertor..

Thanks

Randy

Cool.  When I saw the date posted as July 22 (today), I thought he might be trying to sell it out from under you.

As one who had that happen to him 2 years ago - deal was made, had a bank draft in my hand ready to head out to bring the car home only to find out he sold it to someone else for a few hundred more - it really sucks.  Didn't want to see you go through the same thing.

Congrats on your purchase, it looks sweet!

 Hey Randy,

Thanks for the insight!  I never knew that about these transmissions.  I love the free education that I get here.

Appreciate the kind words Mark!!

I've received much more than I've given, so I like to share with others whenever possible.

Thanks
