1951 Pontiac 3 on the tree transmission swap out

me again..........first thanks to all those that sent in helpful hints on the rattle. It turned out to be the front main bearing of the transmission is breaking down.

So my new project is does anyone know of a good shop that repairs these tranys or what can is swap it out with. Mine is the torque tube type.

I don't think you're gonna find a ""classic"" Transmission shop willing to rebuilt your transmission. To much trouble for them.

I've just rebuilt one for my Chevy last week and there's really not much to it if you're mechanically inclined.

If you're having trouble finding the parts or have any questions .... will be my pleasure to help out !!

Sometimes you can find good used ones cheap. I had a 54 Chevy with a wrecked manual transmission. Found one used online for $20. Worked great!

Many guys take out these original drivetrains to make way for a SBC. They pretty much give the engine/trans/rear ends away.

I would think they are the same but probably different side covers ....... i'll let someone else answer that one with more certainty !

Here's the front bearing for your trans -----> www.ebay.com/itm/1935-1957-Pontiac-Front-Bearing-All-Manual-Transmission-C954379R-/261959195314%3A1951%7CMake%3APontiac&hash=item3cfdfc1ab2&vxp=mtr

thanks again for steering me in the right direction with the proper bearing. I have located a couple of 1953/54 units, one with a blue flame motor installed but I am not sure if either one will fit. My 1951 pontiac repair manual does not have much info on the torque tub other than it has the screw on ring at the rear most part of the trany to keep oil in but does not show where the universal is. If it had more details about what is going on then I could probably make a decision on the trany I need.

I will keep searching before I commit to anything. I gotta drive while the weather is so good, just keep my speed down to 55 mph.

there's serial number on the trans side cover just below the shift arms ..... it should tell you if it's the same .
I'm almost certain they are the same as a 49-54 chevy .
