"$10,000 spent on it the last two years. New timing belt & tensioner."
No wonder he's selling it. Imagine how much it'd cost to do any real work on it.
All the more reason.....................TO LOVE YOUR PONTIAC. They are far more reliable, far more better looking, far more easier to work on, far more cheaper to keep on the road, far more cheaper to buy. Ok, what am i missing here !!!!!!!! WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO OWN ONE OF THESE FOREIGN (fill in the blank). Ok, i know i know it is all about perceived image. What a silly image to try to maintain.

Not a big fan of these models of Porsche. I wouldn't mind an old (1960's) 911. I don't think they'd be too hard to maintain. I remember a friend of my dad's had a mid 60's Mercedes. I got to drive it. I felt really firm and tight on the road. That was the heyday of MB too. Not anymore!

I don't think it cost $10,000 for a new timing belt and tensioner. I suspect it was spent on paint, tires, and other "old car" stuff - you know, just like all old cars. Remember, a 1987 is almost 30 years old now.

I think the image perception is a little unfair. Everybody has their own reasons for liking particular cars that go over and above image. Just because you don't like "foreign" cars is no reason to put down the owner - they are all car guys like us and don't deserve the negative image you are portraying.
Somehow I see toys like that Porch as being just for the rich. How could someone spend the price of a nice classic car on a toy?
I've got way more than that tied up in toys.

As a former Porsche 928 S4 owner I can attest to $10k is a drop in the bucket at a Porsche dealership. But the timing belt, water pump change out is way cheaper than that! Can be easily done for under a $1K. But they are an expensive car to keep on the road. Very smooth, refined, and the best handling car I ever owned. BUT not very fast until over 100 kph. Also very fragile compared to a tough old Pontiac.
Never owned one, and probably never will, but to keep it "real" the cost of a timing belt for a 928 is around $60 and the tensioner roller is around $90. Doesn't sound outrageous to me.
I use to own a older 944 when i was 17 !! Apart from the classic muscle cars, these where the cars that i use to love growing up ! There is just something about the shape that i really really like ! Probably why between 16 and maybe 22 years old, i bought a 944 , Daytona Pacifica and 3 RX-7 !! :p
I realize the t-belt & tensioner did not cost $10k. I was using hyperbole to make a point.
These are not cheap cars to restore.
Personally, I think the 928's were terrific cars. I could not afford a new one back in the day and IMHO there are some cars that if you can't afford a new one, you probably can't afford an old used one either.
Back to the toy ... Cool ride for someone. For some people, the $$$ is simply not an issue.
