Has anyone ever converted to a tilt column?

Hello

I want to switch to a tilt column on my 67 Parisienne 2+2. I've been looking for a few months and haven't found one available. I have two questions:

1. does anyone have one and willing to part with it?

2. I found this on the web http://www.flamingriver.com/index.php/products/c0002/s0003/FR20005 and contacted the supplier. I haven't yet gone to my shed to measure my old column

but was wondering if anyone ever switched from a regular to a tilt originating in the States as I'm not sure the specs are the same.

Also, if anyone has ever done the switch and have any suggestions they are welcome.

Still not sure if a U.S. one will simply bolt in or not. The link talks about wagons and weren't all wagons column shift?

Also has anyone used Flaming River before?

I was looking for a tilt column for my 67 Impala and mentioned this to the fellow that installed my 350 crate engine.

He has a supplier in the US that is far cheaper than what you will find at Flaming River or other suppliers.

He has done a few conversions

I had my done a few weeks ago and there were some issues that had to be addressed.   The rag joint is no longer but is replaced by a multi joint u-joint.

I have noticed that the steering is more sensitive to road variances now and I have to keep on top of it.

Next spring I will seek out a good alignment person to see if he can get rid of this problem.

I just installed 235-60-15 BFG Radial T/A and that may be contributing to some of the sensitivity..

I had the column painted and during the installation it was found that the collar over the column in the car which held the gear selection unit did not fit with the new column so there is a void

where that piece should fit.   My body shop said to bring the car back and they could respray the part that is exposed.

Dont have photos but should be able to get some on the weekend.

I added the cruise control unit as well and that works quite well above 40 mph.

There's no difference in the model... They're all the same... I have one here out of a 2+2 coupe parts car that is going in my 2+2 coupe when the time comes... And that one would fit in a wagon too... which I want to do to in a bucket seat 4+ manual gear set up...

Thanks Cliff. Looks like you had no problem installing the original steering wheel but the collar that covers the column and attaches to the dash why exactly did it not fit? Also by adding the universal joint instead of the original joint does the steering wheel end up in the same location or does it end up closer to the driver?

Cheers,

For what it's worth, for my 65 I did the tilt change over and utilized a column from a 65 Grand Prix (US car) and it fit perfectly. Both the original non tilt and GP tilt, were floor shift columns.  The only thing I needed was the signal connector that is the same as 65 Impala and is readily available.

Leo:  I did not do the installation myself.

The new column did not affect the position of the steering wheel and I re used the original wheel.

The tilt is a nice feature.

You have a good eye to notice the covered portion of the column did not fit.   It housed the gear selector portion and the new column came with its own selector for with PNDLR  The original selector was for the 2 speed powerglide.

It now has a th350 3 speed.

I do have the original pieces.

I intend to take the car to the body shop that painted the column and have them touch up the exposed parts.  That may happen this winter.

I installed an Ididit tilt for the 'Chief(4 speed tilt) and it basically fell into place. Looked and worked like an original piece of GM equipment.

Did you use the original steering wheel?

Very fair price for that column, especially where the dollar is these days.

It appears to be a US column (levers and steering wheel look to be US) but as I posted a while back, I put one of those in my Canadian 66 and it fits.

I saw that ad. Too bad it's a 65 because my understanding is that 65 & 66 were same but not 67. Also it's a column shift and my car is a floor shift unless the shifting mechanism can be removed and doesn't affect, I don't know this, maybe someone more knowledgeable can explain it to me.

Thanks.

You are right, this it not the column for you Leo. It is right for 65-66 only.

The shifting mechanism is easily removed but that won't help you, the column is totally different from a 67.

Thanks Carl. I didn't know the mechanism could be removed ... but now I do.

Back to searching for a 67.

I know where I can get a couple of 67-68 column shift tilts but I'm just not ready to invest $125-$150 in a column if it isn't guaranteed to fit a Canadian car.

For sure, it definitely has to fit and bolt on.

OK.... So, I am totally confused on this thread and I have no idea what all the fuss is about.... We all know, sticking to the Canadian models, that '65-'66 are the same, as well as '67-'68.... So is '69-'70.... (I do have an early '80's Malibu tilt in my '70 with the dimmer on the wheel that I had to cut and fill the shifter knob as it is a converted to manual car.... Other than, I believe, using the original ignition switch and changing the rag joint on the bottom of the column, it was a basic bolt in)

Back to the '67... What is the issue? I have an column shift column in my 2+2 that I had to cut and fill the shifter knob as well... I have a '67 Caprice column shift tilt in my '68 Laurentian wagon that I transformed into my '67 Grande wagon using the original car as the donor... Either chevy or Canadian Pontiac, in my case, there wasn't an issue... Carl just has to decipher which ones that he is looking at is what....

Clearer than mud? (lol) Need pictures?

As for measuring, both non-tilt and tilt are the same length from the dash mounts to the firewall...

We know the 65-66 tilt is wrong for 67 and up, we know the column shift to floor shift conversion is easy to do, those 2 questions are settled I'd say.

I think there is only one issue, can a US 67-68 tilt be put in a Canadian 67-68? That is the million dollar question.
